AMALGAMATION WITH HUTT COUNTY

NOT FAVOURED BY MAKARA COUNCIL The possible amalgamation of the Hutt nnd Makara counties was discussed at yesterday’s meeting of the Makara County Council. The Works and Policy committee, which reported on the subject, urged that the question of amalgamation be deferred, and put to the ratepayers for an expression of opinion at the election of councillors in May of next year. . Councillor Mexted submitted a comparison of figures showing the saving to be effected by joining up with the Hutt County. He urged that the two councils meet and discuss the matter. Mr. E. Windley (chairman could not support the proposal on the figures presented, although he must not be supposed as opposing it. When he was satisfied there was anything in the proposal, it would have his support. Councillor D. Slonne seconded the motion, and said that even if nothing came of such a conference, no barm would be done by holding it. Cr. Windley said he knew that ninety pep cent. Of the ratepayers were against it. He was opposed to any conference. He moved an amendment that it be referred back to the committee. He was quite prepared to go further into the matter, and to consider it with an open zmind. The matter was referred back to the committee for further consideration and report. ■
