Dense smoke issued from a hole in the footpath outside an Auckland hotel for over an hour the other evening when an underground electric power cable suddenly blew up with a muffled report (says the “New eZaland Herald”). The City Fire Brigade was summoned. Several rooms in the hoted were filled with the smoke which, however, decreased in volume as the affected portion of, the cable burned itself out. Workmen from the Auckland Bower Board later dug up the footpath in the vicinity iu order to gain access to the cable.
