EASY MONEY

PROFIT IN HAWKS’ FEET AND HEADS

Some amusement was caused nt last night’s meeting of the Acclimatisation Society by a racy report from the society’s" Masterton ranger. “I had a swag of hawks’ feet last week —only 17-I—from a rabbit trapper who must have found out we pay for them.” he wrote. “I did not think we had so many hawks in our district, but he said lie would be back again as soon as he had another lot. Bringing them in sugar-bags takes the wind out of me.”

It rather “took the wind” out of the executive committee also, as the bonus pavable on hawks’ feet is Gil. a pair. Mr. Dasent (the secretary) pointed out that certain Natives had discovered that while the Wellington Society paid handsomely for the birds’ feet, there was an easily-reached market in Hawke’s Bay for the heads!
