SCHOOL HORTICULTURE

The Parents’ and Old Scholars’ Association of the Newtown School two years ago inaugurated a cottage garden competition among the scholars attending the school; seeds were distributed, the gardens were visited frequently, and prizes were awarded for the first season, and now at the close of the second season prizes were again awarded, and at a gathering of the whole school were presented- by the chairman of the School Committee (Mr. J. W. Salmon), with appropriate remarks aud words of encouragement to the children. He commended them for their diligence during the recent period, reminding them also of the several horticultural > shows which all give special opportunities. The prizes were all of 3 generous nature and were gained by-the following scholars:—

Girls.—Standard III: Ist, Violet King; 2nd, Inez Gindall. Standard IV: Ist, Alma Napier; 2nd, Eva Williams; special prize, Muriel Pederson. Standard V:-Ist. Mavis Wright; 2nd, V. Marsh. Standard VI: Ist, Hazel Jeffery; 2nd, Joyce Twist. Boys.—Standard III: Ist, Erie Burton; 2nd, It. Andrew?. Standard IV: Ist, M. Irons; 2nd, lan Cooper.' Standard V: Ist, R. Workman; 2nd, N. Sergent; special prize, J. Flyger. Mention was made of the kindness of the several donors of prizes, especially Mrs. Russel and Mr. Barley, also the Parents' Assocatton Committee. The children gave three cheers to donors and to the committee, who gave valuable service by inspection of the gardens (numbering over 40) on several occasions. The underlying principle Is, of course, the beautifying of the homes.
