WHARF POLICE TRANSFER
By the projected transfer of Constable A. T. Cleverley from the wharf police to take charge of the Tinakori Road police station, the waterfront will lose a familiar figure. Since the inception of the wharf police station twelve years ago, Constable Cleverley has been on duty on the wharves. The'former superintendent of police (Mr. Norwood), while occupying that post, stated that in his 35 years experience Constable Cleverley had an unbeaten record for detection of theft cases while in uniform. In 1918 Constable Cleverley was awarded the Royal Humane Society’s certificate for jumping into the harbour and rescuing a fireman, belonging to the steamer Devon, who had fallen into the water. Constable Cleverley managed to hold the man up until he was pulled on to the wharf. Unfortunately, the man died from shock. It is stated by those in a position to know that through his vigilance for thieves on the wharves Constable Cleverley has saved the shipping companies and Harbour Board many hundreds of pounds. He has distinguished himself as a wrestler and a boxer. His son, A. Cleverley, is to represent New Zealand in the heavy-weight boxing contests at the Olympic Sports in Holland.
