LEPROSY CURE

MARVELLOUS RESULTS FROM BRITISH DISCOVERY WORK OF LEPER MISSION “The new cure for leprosy, discovered by British scientists led by Sir Leonard Rodgers, has, so far, produced marvellous results, and if the disease is caught in the early stages cures are effected in from six to eight months. Over 400 people have been discharged, cured, from the asylums in India under the Leper Mission’s con-

trol since the introduction of the new treatment,” stated the Rev. R. J. Grundy, of the Leper Mission, to a representative of “The Dominion” yesterday. Mr. Grundy explained, that the new cure is administered by injection of the derivatives of hydnocarpus (Chaulmoogra oil i. More recent developments of the treatment consist of injections of the pure oil, but it is not yet certain whether the pure oil or ethylesters is the more effective. Experiments with both are being carried out at the present time in the leper homes of the mission. Patients are now beiing discharged cured every month. Sir Leonard Rodgers is a member of the executive and of . the Council of the mission, and his opinion, stated in writing to Mr. Grundy, is that the new specific is one of the medical discoveries of the age, curing as it does a disease that has baffled doctors for hundreds of years. Mr. and Mrs. Grundy are at. present touring New Zealand in the interests of the Leper Mission. The mission has its headquarters in London, and the work is extended to 13 different countries. It is international and inter-denominational in type, and there are branches in Ireland, Scotland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United .Rates. Mr. and Mrs. Grundy arrived in New Zealand from India two months ago, and have been giving addresses in the South Island. Mr. Grundy has been in India for 27 years, stationed at Cuttack, Orissa, on the main line between Calcutta and Madras. He will deliver an address upon the work of the missioon in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall to-morrow night.
