1851 SCHOLARSHIP
AWARDED TO AUCKLANDER

The 1851 Scholarship, oue of the highest honours that can be gained by students of ‘cnce in New Zealand, has been awarded this year to Mr. W. A. Macky, assistant to Professor Burbidge. of the Physics Department of the Auckland University College. The first choice made by the Board of Examiners in England was Mr. ; J. C. Andrews of Auckland, but owing to private reasons he was unable to accept: the scholarship. The next selection was Mr. Macky. Under the terms of the scholarship, the winner can carry on scientific research in any rec gnited institution in the world. It is tenable for two --.ears,’ and it is valued at £250 a year. Mr. Mack’ intends to proceed to Eng. land in a month or. two, and will enter Caius College, Cambridge, where he will study in the Cavendish Laboratory under the famous New Zealander, Sifl Ernest Rutherford, who was also 33 1851 Scholarship holder.
