In the House of Commons, in committee on the Finance Bill, the amendment of Mr. B. Riley (Lab.) to reduce the tea duty from 4d. to Id. per pound, as the present impost did not help Empire preference, was rejected by 229 votes to 117. Mr. P. Snowden (Lab.) moved to reduce the petrol tax to Id. per gallon, saying the tax would fall heaviest on commercial vehicles, increase the cost of distribution and nullify the benefits of rate relief. „ Mr Churcbill (Chancellor of the Exchequer) replied that commercial motor-cars were virtually subsidised ns compared with the railways, as they were not bearing the expense of the damage done to the roads.
