LONG CYCLE RACE
, . ♦ TOUR DE FRANCE AUSTRALIA-NEW ZEALAND TEAM (Australian Press Association.) Paris, June 17.' " The Tour de France cycle race started at 9 a.m. from'Levesinet. It is divided into two categories, firstly, teams equipped by big firms, and, secondly, individual racers. The racers are divided into fire teams. The individual racers are either isolated or form nine provincial groups. The Tour de France is now divided into twenty-two stages of about 157 miles daily. The course follows the coastline of the North Sea, the Channel, the Atlantic, the Mediterranean, and the frontiers of Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Luxemburg, and Belgium. The total distance of 33G0 miles is divided into three distinct sections. The total number of starters is IG9. There are five teams, including an Australian and New Zealand t.eaui. (Rec. June 18. 7.30 p.m.) ■London. June IS. Opperman (Australia) finished the first stage, Paris to Caen, 207 kilometres, of the Tour de France Cycle Race, in nineteenth place. Mr. France, the manager, stated that he was quite pleased with the results, particularly with Opperman. It is expected that the Australians’ form will improve as the race is continued, but it is almost impossible to compete adequately without a bigger team. Osborne finished twenty-fourth and "Watson twenty-fifth. .
