NEW ZEALAND RENNET (To the Editor.) Sir,—On June 11 and 12 letters appeared iu vour paper protesting against the duty o*n cheese rennet—2o per cent, on foreign manufacture aud 10 per cent, ou beg to point out that this company are the sole manufacturers of this product iu New Zealand and that we captured over 50 per cent, of the available market without the help of a customs tariff. Jhe duty was placed on oversea rennet to help us to got an .even larger share and so enable us to further reduce our price. Immediately the duty was imposed we reduced our price by o per cent., and I it gives the desired result (which it appears to be doing) a further reductiou will be made. ± .<• ( i,„ s,ve now have over two-thirds ot tne available business and have lowered our price by 5 per cent. I fail to see how the dairv industry will be penalised. If the whole of the remaining rennet required comes from England and pays 10 per cent, dutv the amount of the duty will be less than the 5 per cent, reduction on our sales. Fuither, the selling price of British rennet has not increased 10 per cent. To keep their small share of the market British makers have not added the duty to the selling price. That is. they are paving the duty out of their profits and the consumer is paying the old duty-tree price. , , ... I would ask your correspondents il thej are interested in the importation of dairy factory requisites and, if they are; it they will publish the ratio of landed cost to selling price of rennet (in which they have effective local opposition) and compare it with similar figures for cheese colour Un which they have no local oppositioni. This company buys its raw product from Now Zealand dairy farmers ami meat companies and its profits go (o tile iis-crs of the rennet, the choose companies, who are also the shareholders.—l nm. etc.. G. P. H. FITZGERALD. Director, ' N.Z. Co-op. Rennet Co., Ltd.
