HARRIERS

(By

“Fleetfoot.”)

NEXT SATURDAY’S RUNS.

Wellington.—Guests of Mrs. L. Lyons, 20 Palm Grove, Berhampore, 2.30. Scottish. —Three mile sealed handicap, Lyall Bay, 2.30. Brooklyn.—Guests of Mrs. M. Tamblyn, 8 Hautana Square, Lower Hutt, 2.45. Olympic.—Brooklyn, 3 p.m. Hutt- Valley.—Epuni Hamlet, 2.30.

Champion Novice. Now that all the clubs have held their novice races, the question is being asked who is the champion novice of the city? A glance at the fastest times recorded shows that the honours lay between A. Hivon, of Wellington Club, and A. Sinclair, of Scottish. Hivon’s time, 13min. 53sec., for two miles and a half appears to be a little better than Sinclair’s 15m,in. 5,3-ssee. for three miles, but one will have to’wait until after the interclub races before either can be classed as the champion novice. Wellington Club. With the weather leaving nothing to be desired, the Wellington Club held a most-enjoyable outing from Kelburn on Saturday afternoon.- Twenty-nine runners turned out- to do their best over a good trail laid by E. Williams and A. B. Morris. ■

To give the handicapper a chance to view the form of' new runners, a run through was Ijeld. pver .six miles olj fairly stiff country. From. the outset. J. Shephard. A. Burns, x\..-Hivon, and L. Watson hit the front, and the pace was on. When the wireless station was reached, the field was well strung out, but, hard as the course was, not one of the pack pulled out, all being home fifteen minutes after the first man.

Once again J. Shephard and A. Burns fought out a great finish, the former getting home by two yards, with A. Hivon third. That all the good things, said about this boy are right he proved by running Shephard and Burns all the way, and it was only in the sprint home that he dropped behind. L. Stoles, who ran .well in the run-in two weeks ago, staged a surprise by beating L. Watson for fourth place in a hard finish. Evidently Stoles likes the distance, and wall be an asset to the club in big races. W. Lyall went well for. about three miles, but the hills found him out. He is carrying too much overweight at present. P. Karlen- was nursing an injured leg and could- not show his usual dash. T. Mulcahy does not intend to turn out for some time, having recently undergone an operation.

Olympic Club. In Saturday’s race for the Philp Memorial Cup, 30 competitors faced the starter. Porter, the winner, has been the jninuer-up for the two previous, races for the cup. He is a consistent runner.with a nice easy'style and good judgment. W. Taylor, this season’s runner-up, will have to be reckoned with in future events. Bright, the third - man, is getting into form, and should rank amongst the best shortly. Blair should have registered better'time on Saturday, as he can produce real good' form 'if he' tries. That P. Wilson has recovered from his illness Was proved when he made fastest time (16min. 12see.). The handicapper must have been well pleased with the results of the race, for. the -first six men finished within 30 seconds, while the whole of the thirty runn- ished within 3| minutes, an average of a man finishing every seven seconds. Club supporters were notices .e for their absence on Saturday.

Brooklyn Club. The Brooklyn novice handicap was run on Saturday. The limit man, Hewitt, tried very hard to make use of his handicap, for when, after leading for some time, he was displaced by Tamblyn. he camo again and took the lead, but alas. the back-markers were moving fast, and he was passed by D. Petrie, who led for the rest of, the race, and finished with plenty to spare. E. T. White was second, and H. Knowles third. A. Sime (scr.) made fastest time, ISmin. 55sec. for'three miles. > Scottish Club.

“Cleanliness is next to godliness,” as the saying goes, but I doubt if a single member could quote those lines after last Saturday’s eight-mile run at Karori. Members were caked with mud and dirt, and some of them looked really terrifying objects when they landed home. Fred Silver, of the fast pack, made the pace very hot, notwithstanding the conditions. About two miles from home all the runners were united, and a smart pace was set along the latter portion of Makara Road to Karori Council Chambers. Here a run-in was held of about 300 yards, and in a great finish Sweeney headed C. P. Rogers by three yards, "with S. C. Ferguson beating Woodcock on the tape for third place. Over thirty runners started, and the pace all the way .was very fast. Mesdames Needham and Payton were judges, with “Pop” Walter starter. Our worthy president. Mr. W1 J. Walter. was among “his lads” again on Saturday. and up to date he has never missed a run. This speaks volumes for his sportsmanship and keenness towards the club’s activities. Next week, at Lyall Bay the threemile sealed handicap will be held, and this will give the novices their first actual try-out against’, the club’s seasoned runners. ... „ . S. C. Ferguson, the well-known Wairarapa sprinter, has joined up with the Scottish Club for the ensuing season. Law was rather impressive on Saturday, and the novice race was no judge of this runner’s capabilities. G. Zander and A. L. Stevens are moving freely, and later on should prove a formidable combination, as they are both training together. Mr. F. Archer has kindly lent his gymnasium at Wadestown for the benefit of the Scottish harriers. Both this year’s and last year’s novice winners were retained from these quarters, and it speaks well for the facilities and offerings open to our runners, and full advantage should be taken of his offer. Wellington, 1906.

The first club race held by the Wellington Club in 1906 was a three-mile handicap, won by W. H. Press (20sec.), with W. B. Bennett (12see.) second; the second event was a four-mile sealed handicap, in which M. Mulcahy'put up fastest time, 22min. 43sec. Eor the sealed handicap honours, Mulcahy (scr.) and W. B. Bennett (20sec.) dead-heated for first place. The five-mile club championship and sealed handicap were contested at Miramar. W. Bennett led W. H. Press home by 2see. In the . sealed handicap Press, with a handicap of 50 sec., came first, and Bennett (45sec.) second. The annual road race for the Whyte and Mackay Shield was contested by seven teams. J. H. Prenderville made fastest time, and the shield was won by the Catholic Young Men’s Club team with 20 points. The members of the team were J. H. Prenderville. M. Mulcahy, M. Prenderville, and P. Fitzgerald.
