BOURDON BELL OF MEMORIAL CARILLON.
The top picture shows the bell, donated by Mr. and Mrs. L. P. Blundell, with inscription and decorative frieze, as designed by Mr. G- N. Sturtevant, of Wellington, on the shoulder. The second picture reveals the frieze in bold relief, and the third the shield centred over (he inscription. The elements of the design are: (a) the fernleaf from the badge commonly worn by the New Zealand reinforcements, and (b) leaf of the New Zealand flax (phormiuni tena.v), a staple product of the province of Wellington. The shield binding the frieze shows in the upper portion (chief) the Union Jaek, and below, on a blue ground, the four red stars, edged white, representing the Southern Cross as in the arms of the Dominion of New Zealand. The colours ate represented by lines as in heraldic engravings, viz., vertical lines for red, and horizontal lines for blue. The white, both in the Union Jack and the stars, will be burnished. The concluding line, “Ana! He Tangi Aroha,” beneath the dedication, means “Hark ! A Cry of Love.”
