CAROL LEAVES

EMBARKS AT DOVER FOR BELGIUM

A WILD GOOSE CHASE (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Australian Press Assn. —United Service.) London, May 16. Prince Carol embarked at Dover for Belgium. (British Official Wireless.) Rugby, May 16. Prince Carol of Rumania, who was asked by the British Government to leave the country owing to his political activities, took his departure today for Belgium. Secrecy was maintained about the Prince’s plans. It was understood that he would go from Godstone in Surrey, where he has been staying as the guest of M. Jonescu, to London and would then catch the boat for Ostend. Instead he motored direct to Dover. (Australian Press Association.)

London, May 16.

Carol's departure from Godstone was the occasion of a wild goose chase, in which the whole Press of England was hoodwinked. A car piled with luggage suddenly dashed through the gateway. “That,” shouted the police, “is the Prince.” Ten waiting cars, With passengers, including a French detective representing the French Government, a number of agents of foreign Powers, English and foreign journalists, dashed in pursuit. The cars tore ■along at sixty miles an hour —the whole 'thing resembling a kinema stunt. The chase continued into London's dense traffic as far as Hyde Park corner, where the leading car stopped, the blinds were run up, and it was found to contain a friend of Carol. In the meantime Carol, with no attempt at secrecy, entered another car and sped towards Dover. Six other cars then dashed from London to Dover just in time ,to see Carol, surrounded by English detectives and Home Office officials, walk on to the boat. Carol, expressing obvious annoyance, swiftly descended to his private cabin. CAROL ANGRY (Australian Press Association.) (Rec. May 17, 9.30 p.m.) London, May 17. Prince Carol was evidently in an angry mood as he boarded the steamer. He refused to speak to any one, but his secretary called out, “May we never see England again.” ARRIVAL AT BRUSSELS (Rec. May 17, 9.30 p.m.) Brussels, May 17. Prince Carol arrived in a motorcar from Ostend. He is staying at the Palace Hotel.
