DAIRY FARMERS’ UNION
MONTHLY MEETING. Palmerston North, May 17. Mr. N. Campbell presided at the monthly meeting of the 'Wellington provincial executive of the New Zealand Dairy Farmers’ Union in Palmerston North to-day. ~ A letter was received from the Director of the Dairy Division of the Department of Agriculture, who thanked the union for what was regarded as its official opinion that no slur had been intended to be cast on the officials ot the Department in connection with the recent discussion on what had been supposed to be amendments to the dairy regulations. Te Department appreciated the assurances of the union, but suggested that in the future the Division might bo given a chance to make investigations of any complaints against its officers before publicity was resorted to. The chairman brought up the question of “bobby” calves, stating that it was his opinion that more consideration should be paid to this in the district. By pooling, the farmers in the South Island had received 10s. per head net, while advances of ss. per head, which was not much more than the price of the skin, had also been received. Every farmer wanted to get rid of his bull calves, and Mr. Campbell thought a local venture would prove to be a profitable one.- In Denmark farmers obtained ISs. per calf, and there was no reason why the same price could not be obtained in the Dominion. _ ~ Messrs. Campbell, P. J. Small, J. Boyce, and Faulding were appointed a committee to go fully into the question of a vaccine treatment for mamniitis,-as put forward by a proprietary concern, and to select n herd for treatment. It was decided that the annual conference be held on July 19 at 11 a.m.
