Airs. J. M. Earle and family, who have been on holiday in Palmerston NOrth, have returned to 'Wellington.

Mrs. W. J. Napier, of Devonport, has returned to Auckland from a visit to Karori, where she was the guest of her niece, Mrs. Ferrer.

Mrs. T. M. Hunter and Misses Hunter, Lyttelton, arrived in Wellington, yesterday. They will be the guests of Airs. W. Cable, Levy Street.

Mrs. A. Sievwright is in Auckland, and will be the guest of her mother, Mrs. P. A. Herman, at Shortland Flats.

Airs. Guthrie-Moore, of Wellington, is the guest of Airs. T. J. Alcßride, St. Albans Street, Christchurch. She will leave next week on a visit to Dunedin.

Air. and Airs. Harvey, of Christchurch, passed through AVellington yesterday on their way to Auckland. From' there they will commence a tour of the Islands.

Airs. Rhodes-Williams, of Wellington, is visiting Auckland with her son, Air. T. R. Williams, and will spend a fortnight there, Air. Williams will take up his residence permanently in Auckland.

Aiiss Thelma Aitken, who was successful in winning the ladies’ championship, elocutionary section, at the Afanawatu Competitions, is a pupil of Air. Clement Alay, of Wellington.

Subscriptions are coming in well for the fund to buy new colours for the Wellington Regiment. The committee will meet on Alonday afternoon next, and it is requested that all collecting cards will be handed to the treasurer then.

The Mayoress, Airs. Troup, invited Miss Alaude Royden for a drive round Wellington yesterday. The day was perfect, and Wellington showed its best to the visitor. After driving over Alount Victoria, where beautiful views of harbour and sea were obtained, a call was made at St. Helen’s Hospital, where the visitors were received by the matron (Miss Newmann), Dr. Agnes Bennett, and the Sisters. After seeing the hospital and having morning tea, Aiiss Royden visited the residential nursery with Airs. Porter (organiser of the Women’s National Reserve), also Karitane Home, where the matron showed the visitors over the building. Miss Royden was much impressed with the beauty of the site, and the hospital, and admired the appointments. Accompanying them, also were Aiiss Collinson, Dr. Ada Paterson, Aiiss Bicknell (head of the nurses), Dr. Sylvia Chapman, and Miss A. Kane (chairman of the Welcome Committee).

British and Foreign Bible Society. The organising secretary of the British Foreign Bible Society (Mrs. Porter) has recently held meetings in various schools In connection with the society. ~ , At Island Bay Mrs. Vickery presided over a good attendance. Mrs. Brown (secretary) gave an account of the year’s work, stating 1927 had been the record for Island Bay. A vote of sympathy with the relatives of Miss Hood was passed, the members standing in silence. Mrs. Vickery paid a high tribute to the fine work of the late Miss Hood, which was endorsed by ' Miss McGowan. The following officers were elected: President, Mrs. Vickery; vice-president, Miss McGowan; secretary, Mrs. Brown; collectors, Mesdames Brook, Marshall, McHutcheon, Vickery, Davies, Ireland, McGregor, Hull, Scrygemour and Miss McGowan. The organising secretary congratulated the officers upon their excellent method of keeping in touch with all collectors and reporting progress during' the annual effort. Mrs. Vickery entertained all at afternoon tea at the close of the meeting. At Melrose Mrs. F. G. Tonks presided and entertained those present at afternon tea. Mrs. Duff (secretary) reported on the work for the year, which was most satisfactory to all concerned. The following officers were elected: President, Mrs. F. G. Tonks; secretary, Mrs. Duff; Treasurer, Mr. Brooker; collectors, Mesdames A.’ F. Tonks, Brooker, Munn, F. G. Tonks and Duff. Mrs. Alexander Low (president) presided over a good attendance of the Roseneath-Oviental branch and gave a most interesting and informative address upon her recent viist to Fiji and Sydney. The organising secretary outlined the work of the society and read a message received from the general secretary in Jerusalem. Mrs. Low was elected president, Miss Egglinton secretary, and the following were elected collectors: Mesdames Low, Bird. Kyle, Credo, Lewis, Vickery and Misses Egglinton and Clark. Mrs. Low entertained all present to afternoon tea. Te Aro -members were also entertained by Mrs. Low, the organising secretary congratulating them upon their record year. MrS. Cullen was elected president, Miss Beeves secretary, with the following collectors: Sister Maud, Mrs. McCabe, and Miss Reeves. *

Hankey Street Branch was also entertained by Mrs. Low. The organising secretary read a letter of apology from the president (Mrs. D. Anderson) for unavoidable absence, but enclosing a donation of a guinea. - The Wellington campaign is now in full swing, meetings fire being held in the city and suburbs, the extension of the work shows the growing interest in all parts.

Buckletou, the president of the Victoria League Committee, is to be absent in Australia for several months. Airs. Buckleton at the last committee meeting proposed Airs. Tripp as chairman. A warm vote of thanks was passed to Airs. Buckleton for her offer to lend her house for a bridge party, at which members would make up tables, on Empire Day. The Daughters of the Empire Society, Canada, sent a number of -names of girls about 11 years to 18 years who would like correspondents in AVellington, and it was reported, Lady Luke has arranged this. At one secondary school, the project has been taken up so enthusiastically that some of the Canadian girls will receive two letters, and will be asked to find another correspondent. The honorary treasurer reported that a wreath had been placed on the Cenotaph on Anzac Day in memory of those who lie in other lands.

The committee had received requests from two girls who were applying for governess’s positions, two companion helps, and a bookkeeper, one of whom wanted experience in a tearoom, it was stated. Hostesses and friends of the league had given advice and assistance in these matters, and the hostesses, Mrs. MeadowcrOft and Mrs. Corrigan, had entertained those who were in Wellington, so that lonely times for the strangers might be avoided. Mrs. W. G. Reid had offered to act as hostess for May. The members expressed their regret at the death of Mr. Harcourt, whose generous help to the league has been of great assistance. It was reported that the cake and flower morning for the Girls’ Friendly Hostel at Mr. Harcourt’s, under Mrs. Pow, had done very well, and it was honed that members would help the one on May 25, so that the required sum for the furnishing of the room might be obtained. Levy if she would -main arrange the programme. °ln connection with the presenting Af new colours from the women of Wellington to the Wellington Regiment it wns decided to send a donation of £3 3s. from the league. £1 was contributed to' the funds of the Free Ambulance. Mrs. Buckleton saying it was of such great service ■ to the city.
