WANGANUI WINTER MEETING OPENS BRIGADIER BILL WINS STEEPLECHASE CONNOLLY HANDICAP TO HOROMEA (By Telegraph.—From “The Watcher.) Wanganui, May 17. Brigadier Bill won the Wanganui Steeplechase on the opening of the winter meeting to-day in very attractive style from the southerner Tuki, with Passin’ Through third. Brigadier Bill’s jumping was first class. In the May Hurdles Mount Marta scored well from Troilus and Matu. The favourites Peneus and Pouri-were well beaten. The principal flat events attracted large fields and provided good contests. The Connolly Handicap was won all the way by an outsider in Horomea, with Blimp second and Royal Damon third. The Borough Handicap went to Silvermine, from Tea Time and Benzora.

The attendance was good, but probably owing to the consistent failure of the favourites, the totalisator figures declined in comparison with the opening day last year, being £22,302, as against £23,325 10s., a decrease of £1023 10s.

PURUA HANDICAP. The Waikato-trained Lady’s Boy made a big bld to carry his army of backers through in the hack sprint, and had his rider not made such a lot of use of him he would have won. As It was he raced up to the front with Eka, and after the latter retired he failed to withstand a challenge bv Desert Lad and went under by half a neck. In addition he ran wide into the straight. Desert Lad was always well placed, and the astonishing thing was tlie price he returned after costing his backers money at Egmont. Fee Simple, the other representative from G. New’s stable, ran a good race, although he drew No. 14 at the post, and both he and Callanmorc, who drew 16, wore prominent all the way and are worth keeping in mind. King Mart covered a good deal of ground to finish fifth, and Avro, nearly last at the turn, finished sixth with a great run. Bright Comet and Cold Air ran fair races. The latter was last to leave the mark and was eighth at the post. HACK STEEPLES. A nice coup went astray in the Hack Steeplechase when a big outsider in Radiate. after leading all the way and jumping well fell at the last fence and left Mixed Heather with a hollow vMtory over Ruby Rin" with Son o’ Mine a moderate third and the favourite, San Fera, in fourth place well beaten. It was a fine race for a mile and a half. Mixed Heather covered a good bit of extra ground in running as contrasted with the riders of Radiate and Ruby Ring saving everv yard. Ruby Ring had every chance, but jumped badly. Risk fell at the third fence and Vanninnia baulked. Royal Heather being the only other to complete the course. , WANGANUI STEEPLECHASE. The big steeplechase was an interestin? contest, and a fine spectacle, which definitely established two things: First, that Brigadier Bill, who won very easily after a brilliant display of jumping, has now won twice in two starts over big fences and takes rank amongst the likely candidates for much higher honours: secondly. Comical showed that, with experience,* he will do much better as a steeplechaser than he has hitherto given signs of doing. Comical, although only fourth at the finish, gave a greatly-improved dis-

play over the fences, and for the first time in his career as a steeplechaser returned to the enclosure without having parted from’his rider. He was ridden by the Hawke's Bay amateur rider. Mr. R. Russell. who has previously given evidence of his ability in hunters’ events. Air. Bussell rode Comical a fine race, and it is due largely to" his determination that the horse completed the course. Comical tried to shirk a lot of fences, particularly the stand double the first time round, but liis rider straightened him iip and made him jump in a style which augurs very promisingly for the future.

With Comical out in front, the pace was on and the field soon strung out, Peter. Maxwell and Brigadier Bill at intervals ’ being nearest to the leader, with Passin’ Through, Tuki and Maunga bringing up the rear. By the time two rounds had been completed, Comical was caught by the bunch, which did not include the favourite, Maunga. whose gear had slinned. and lie was pulled up. Brigadier Bill then went out in front, and jumping splendidly, he soon had the race in safe keeping, winning with a good deal in hand. There was a great finish over the last half-mile for second place, Tuki staying on too well and beating Passin’ Through, with Comical handy and Peter Maxwell next. 'Frisco Jack did not complete the course. Brigadier Bill’s jumping was brilliant. KAITOKE HURDLES. Those who accepted a short price about Mister Gamp in the Hack Hurdles were soon out of anxiety, as he fell at the second fence. It was not his fault, the fall being brought about by the green showing of Shining Armour just in front of him, and Shining Armour continued to be troublesome in this respect until he tried to run off and fell at the fence five furlongs from home. Our Jack and Peshwa were prominent from Wenday, Polyphemus, and Modern in the.running, but over the concluding stages Peshwa asserted a decided superiority and won nicely from ' Polyphemus, who got home from Wenday with nothing to spare, both running good races. Modern finished fourth, but was never really dangerous, and Our Jack fifth, after giving a promising display.

MAY HURDLES. Backers went astray in the open hurdles, when they plunged for Peneus and Pour!. Peneus made a good showing for a mile and a half, but was then beaten Uadi into sixth place. Ned Kelly cracked on the pace in front and was soon responsible for stringing out the whole field. He was joined by Peneus and Troilus down the back the last time, and Troilus then went out in front, opening a good gap. Mdunt Marta went after him over the last half and won an interesting race by nearly two lengths. Matu, who was third practically all the way, kept his place close up, and there was a big gap to the fourth horse, Pouri, who just headed off Perle de Leon, Peneus, and Braeman. Mount Marta looked very fit and well, and he won very nicely, improving on his consistent form of the past month or two. He was vary capably handled by his rider, Jarvis. The rider of Troilus appeared a bit anxious to reach the front. Troilus ran a good race. Both Pouri and Perle de Leon were staying on, Pouri creating the more favourable impression. Perle de Leon was outpaced all the way. No excuses can be made for Peneus. R. W. King decided not to run Aberfeldy, who was scratched at 12.19 p.m. CONNOLLY HANDICAP. More good money went overboard when Vesperus, a substantial favourite, was last away at the start of the Connolly Handicap, and although making a good run on the rails later could do no better than sixth. The winner turned up in one of the outsiders in Horomea, who led from start to finish. Formerly trained at Levin, Horomea is now owned and trained at New Plymouth by R. Johnson. She was possibly a trifle lucky to defeat Blinip, who was in behind her ail the way and Whose rider appeared to hold her a bit too cheaply. At any rate when he did make his run he was overwhelming her and lost.only by a long head. Blimp was a well-backed second choice. Royal Damon was nicely placed all the way, with Glenross in behind the leaders, but he could do no better than a fair third, While GlenrOss went back to fifth at the finish. He ran a good race and is bound to Improve. Black Mint lay alongside Blimp most of the way but went back in the straight, and Ring Boy was never in the picture. Beaumont ran quite a good race Into fourth place, and Kawhakina was fair after covering some extra ground. Paltonu .was scratched at 10.55 a.m. and Hlpo at 2.50 p.m. BOROUGH HANDICAP. Favourites were again out of the money in the open sprint, which was won all the way by Sllvermlne who, considering his consistent form Of late, went out at a good price. Tea Time went with him to the straight and was there beaten, although he hung on well to get second money from Benzora, who was last away and finished with a phenomenal run to cut Limited out of third money. ' Limited was always well placed and had every chance, get going who finished well into sixth place. First Acre was never dangerous. Covent Garden, who was a trifle better backed than Limited, showed fine speed all down the back from No. 13 at the post, and was well placed coming into the straight; here he got into trouble and finished in the ruck. Moa Bird was last away and never got up. Late scratchings were Arrow Lad (12.55 p.m.) and Melissa (3.33 p.m.).

WEIGHTS FOR SATURDAY

RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES CANDIDATES FOR AMBERLEY Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, May 17. The promising Greyspear—Sweet Smile gelding Light Hearted, in Nurse’s stable, was responsible for a smart gallop at RICCarton to-day, comfortably accounting for Lancer over half a mile. He has had regular practice at the barrier lately, but turns round when the tape is released, and until he improves in his manners his owner-trainer does not intend to race him. In all probability he may be taken to the Wellington winter meeting. Chickwheat, who is looking better' now than at any part of his career, galloped well at Riccarton yesterday in company with Gold Mint, and it is evident the race he had at Ashburton benefited him considerably. He has shown such promise since his spell that the idea of trying him out as a hurdler will be dropped in the meantime, and after competing at Amberley this .month he will form one of Nurses, team for the Dunedin meeting. Sir-Roy is expected to take his place in the field for the Starkey Memorial Handicap at the Amberley meeting. He continues to get through useful work at Riccarton, and yesterday was seen to advantage in a gallop over six furlongs with Bronstell. His stable mate, Master Clarence, started with this pair, but was badly beaten at the finish. Ho has evidently not gone on as well as anticipated a few weeks back. . Thorndale will be a starter at the Amberley meeting,- and his prospects of securing another trophy look favourable at the present time. He did not do much track work prior to the Ashburton meeting owing to the plough gallop being out of commission, but he was subjected to some useful tasks on his trainer’s property. The Ashburton race did him a lot of good, and he should be a much better horse at the Amberley fixture. Roscrea continues to make satisfactory progress; and yesterday galloped five furlongs in good time with Gay Crest. Their stable companion Arikiwai also got through strong exercise and looks in splendid order to undertake future racing. There is every indication that both Arikiwai and Roscrea will .be taken to Sydney. Star Stranger II and Waihemo, who have been trained on the New Brighton trotting track, have been transferred to Riccarton under the care of J. W. Jennings. This pair have raced disappointingly up to date, and if they show no improvement at the Amberley meeting they will probably be put aside for the Winter months. Battle Colours registered a fast gallop overi’seven furlongs to-day, and there is no doubt about the gradual Improvement the Solferino gelding has made in the last couple of months. .He was not taken to Ashburton owing to the small stake and the risk of getting higher in the weights, and the same attitude may be adopted in regard to his Amberley engagement He has not been nominated for the Dunedin meeting, but may be at Trentham in July. A race his connections have in view for him is the Winter Cup. Rapier will rejoin the active brigade at Riccarton at the conclusion of the Dunedin meeting. J. J. Lewis paid a flying visit from Ashburton to Riccarton during the week with Wharncliffe and gave the gelding two serviceable schooling tasks on Tuesday and Wednesday. He jumped well on both occasions, making only one mistake when lie got too close to the concluding fence of a twice round effort on 'Wednesday and dislodged his rider. Whilst at headquarters, Wharncliffe was under offer to a local stable, but as yet no business has been transacted.

Advice froni Ashburton to-day states that A. E. Ellis is not yet out of danger, but tliere is a slight improvement in his condition.

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By “Vigilant.”)

When Gaze won the Century Hurdle race at Wanganui in 1926 his performance was the subject of much discussion and this was well justified, for ho "on in dashing style. While schooling at Ellerslie some little time later, Gaze . had a bad fall and small hopes were entertained of his prospect of ever racing again. He was subsequently off the scene for some considerable time, but though he has not placed any jumping events to his credit in the interval it can be said that ho has not lost any of Ins pace on the flat, for in the decision of the Autumn Handicap nt Hastings last month he ran Vesperus to a nOck for first honours. Gaze is engaged at the eonnng Auckland y nter meeting, so a line may then be gathered as to his jumping ability alter he has been schooled a few times.

The result of the May Hurdles at Wanganui yesterday does not throw any light on the future prospects ot Perle de Leon or Peneus, who were rated as being 'Try much improved hurdlers. Neither filled a place yesterday. In the case of Perle de Leon excuses can be offered, as he has not started in a hurdle race for some considerable time, but Peneus had just won a hurdle race at the recent Hawke s Bay meeting in most attractive style, and his prospects of success yesterday were rated highly, so his performance was rather disappointing. Aberfeldy, whose chance was also estimated highly, was not a runner, so no conclusion can be drawn as to his present form.

That good performer Corinax is getting through plenty of solid work at Ellerslie and doing it well. If the going is not too bad when the Cornwall Handicap comes up for decision next month, J. Williamson s gelding may prove one of the hardest to beat in that event (says tn exchange!,

Among the many candidates claiming engagement in the Great Northern Steeplechase and minor jumping Company at Ellerslie is Mangani. The Day Comet gelding has had experience over hurdles and country, and has shaped with distinct promise in both departments.

While not doing anything approaching really fast work (says a northern exchange), Royal Tea is bowling along in great style in his preparation at Ellersilie. This good-looking son of Tea Tray, who is in great condition at the present time, is working as soundly as ever again, and is likely to win further victories inn the future.

"When The Fox finished second to Luminary in the Dominion Handicap at Avondale be was noticed finishing on very stronglv in that event, in which he had none the best of the luck in the running. He has been training on well during the interval and should be an improved horse when he is again required to race.

Archibald is receiving a spund preparation from J. Williamson and promises to strip a very lit horse next month. The Arcliiestown gelding ran second in th > Great Northern Hurdles last year with 10.7 and should again go a good race this year with 10.12. although he has a weight he may find it hard to win with. Archibald is expected to run in the Great Northern Steeplechase and he will be schooled either over hurdles or country a little later.

Having his first schooling task for some little time. Beau Cavalier impressed the track watchers by his excellent display of jumping over the steeplechase fences on the flat at headquarters the other morning. At the time of writing no rider had been secured to steer Beau Cavalier in the Great Northern Steeplechase next month.

Princess Ronnie’s tasks have been mostly confined to ordinary pace-work during the last couple of weeks, but with the near approach of the June meeting C. Norgrove will be speeding her up again. Racing under winter conditions may not be entirely in her favour, and for that reason racegoers would accord her better support on a firm track (says an exchange).

The two placed performances registered by Revel at the Auckland Racing Club’s autumn meeting, when he ran second to Wedding March in the Brighton Hurdles and occupied a similar position to Wiltshire in the Autumn Steeplechase, are not likely to be overlooked next month. Revel has not been raced since he was seen out at Ellerslie at Easter time.

Gav Queen shows promise of being a useful performer over hurdles during the winter, and she will assist to give some interest to the jumping events at Amberlev next week. She was schooled over four hurdles on Monday last and gave an attractive display.

Toawai, a two-year-old half-brother to Ayikiwai and Pilliewinkie, has joined r. D. Jones’s stable.
