A Press Association message from i Tauranga reports the death at noon yesterday of Mr. Charles Hartley, a well-known local draper and yachting enthusiast, and formerly a well-known resident of Petone. A service in memory of the late Mr. J. Bevin was held in St. Barnabas’ Church, Khandallah, on Friday evening. There was a large congregation ' of friends, including representatives of the Railway Department and the Bowling Club. ■ The altar was decorated with flowers from the deceased gentleman’s garden. The service was conducted by the vicar, the Rev. O. M. Stent, who was assisted by the Rev. R. S. "Watson, who read the lesson. The vicar gave a short address on the text, “Our Friend Sleepeth,” and in the course of his remarks read a telegram which had been received from the president of the Returned Soldiers’ 'Association, bearing tribute to the esteem in which Mr. Bevin was held by the R.S.A. during the war. News has been received from America of the death of Mr. T. W. Patterson, the expert who was sent out to Wellington with the bituminous asphalt plants now established at Rongotai and Ngahauranga, and-who gave Messrs. A. J. Paterson (then city engineer) and K. E. Luke many valuable hints as to the best methods of laying down bituminous pavement whilst they were engaged in paving the Hutt Road between Wellington and Petone. The late Mr. Patterson had travelled to Japan, China, South America, Canada and other countries with these plants, and was a genial and knowledgable man of the world, with a keen sense of humour.
