EVANS BAY ROAD
IMPROVEMENT AT PATENT SLIP
According to a letter received by. the Wellington Automobile Club from the Wellington Patent Slip Company, there is every probability of improved conditions in the road crossing at the slipway. The letter stated that recently the matter was discussed by the Patent Slip Company with Mr. Luke, of the city engineer’s department, and a satisfactory rrangement had now been come to whereby the City Council had agreed to bituminise the road and the company would arrange to do some more wood blocking about the rails. So far as the company was concerned, its portion of the work would be carried out at the earliest opportunity, and when the work was completed the condition of the crossing would be considerably improved, and that should obviate any further complaints in that direction.
There was one point, however, with regard to the complaints of motorists having sustained damage or broken springs. From observations made the company knew that a number of motorists and lorry drivers did not take the trouble to slacken speed when crossing the slipway, and probably the speed at which they were travelling was primarily responsible for the damage caused to their cars and lorries.
The secretary reported that be had acknowledged the letter, agreeing that a number of motorists did not slacken speed at the crossing, and the condition of the crossing for fast travelling was good neither for the driver’s comfort nor his pocket. He expressed the club’s satisfaction at the proposed works. The reply was approved.
