THE WEATHER
HEAVY RAIN IN MANY LOCALITIES, “The storm referred to on Saturday, which was advancing across the Tasman Sea from near Tasmania was centred this morning west of Greymouth, and had developed into a rather vigorous cyclone,” stated the Meteorological Office yesterday. “Strong northerly winds blew during Sunday night at i>laces north of Cape Farewell and Akaroa, gale force being reached in many districts. Rain commenced at most places during Sunday evening, and by 9 a.m. on Monday morning there had been fairly general falls experienced in the Island, where in many cases they were heavy. The cyclone centrq will probably cross this island during Monday afternoon, and winds will back to westerly. The pressure has again fallen over south-eastern Australia, so there are not likely to be strong southerly winds for some time, but the weather is likely to remain unsettled for several days.

The ’following figures show falls recorded for the 24 hours up till 9 a.m. on Monday morning: Cape Maria van Diemen, 422 points; Kaitaia, 320 points; Mangontii, 421 points; Kawakawa, 309 points; Puhipuhi, 440 points; Ruatangata, 213 points; Wairul Falls Power Station, 250 points; Te Kawhata, 220 points; Waihi, 400 points; Westport, 124 points; and Arthur’s Pass, 185 points.
