Royal Arcli Chapter No. 4, U.A.0.D., Wellington, held its monthly meeting on Wednesday, May 2, R.A.D. Bro. Hall in the chair. Business of considerable importance for the good and well-being ot the order was transacted. A report was received that Bro. C. D. Hargreave's health was improving, and fraternal greetings with best wishes fi>r a quick recovery were extended to tills veteran Past-President. Nomination of ofllcers for the ensuing year took place, Bros. Roland and Cooper being nominated R.A.D. and V.A.D. respectively. A large number of Bretheren attended to hear the result of tlie last ritual contest, in which Excelsior Lodge was declared tlie winner of a keen contest. Pride of Brooklyn was second, being l>ut one point behind, while Coronation Lodge took third place. Bro. J. Rowarth. Arch Druid of Pacific Lodge, . won Hie Champion Arch-Druid's medal, awarded for knowledge of chairmanship and rules of the order. In Hits test five candidates competed. Two judges were appointed to act in the Mooney Shield contest. Bros. Cooper and Johnson were deputed to visit all lodges In Wellington and suburbs, to examine all candidates for A.D. and V.A. chairs. The Chapter decided to visit 110neer Lodge No. 1 on Wednesday, May J. when Vice-Grand Arch Bro. Jackson would address tlie juveniles.

Of the large number of young lads who have come forward for examinations under the Defence Act in Gisborne, the number rejected has not been above expectations, though it has been noted that chest measurements have been rather disappointing on tlie whole (says the “Poverty Bay Herald”). The percentage of rejects has averaged about 20, and a number of those who failed to pass tlie medical examination are lads who, with a little training, could be brought up to the high standard of general physique set by the departmental authorities. It i.< surmised that the poor chest measurements recorded in many cases of rejection are due to cramping exercises, such as cycling, which constrict tlie muscles of the chest mid shoulders. Taking those examined ns a whole, the medical officers found this particular dimension rather lower than is expected of colonial youth.
