CHURCH BENEFICES

PARISHIONERS’ RIGHTS

(Australian Press Assn.—United Service.)

London, May 9.

In the House of Commons, Mr. F. W. Eastbury (C.) introduced a Bill to extend parishioners’ rights in respect of presentation to church benefices. He quoted the disturbances at Darwen, which arose because an Anglo-Catholic was forced upon an unwilling congregation. The Bill gave parochial councils the power of veto, if they disapproved of an appointment. Mr. Birchall opposed the Bill. He said that the Church Assembly was the right body to deal with the matter.

The Bill was read a first time.
