FUTURE OF THE RACE
PROBLEMS TO BE MET Dominion Special Service. . Otaki, May 10. While listening to Native evidence before the Otaki Rating Commission to-day, a ‘‘Dominion” representative got in conversation with a resident of long standing in the district, and who had a fund of Information concerning Mahri life. "Native lands are a great problem, he said. “When I came here forty years ago, you were sure to see a wellcultivated garden in front of every Maori house. They had plenty, of provisions, and a goo<J stock of dried fish, with the result that they w-ere always well supplied for the winter months. Nowadays, it is fairly safe to say that ndt One native family has a supply for the winter. They have nearly all leased their lends to Chinese, and spend the rent money as soon as they get it. So long at they can collect rents from others, so long will they do no work. “The same thing applies to the whole world.” he added. “From what I can see, the w'orld is faced with three great and serious problems. The first concerns the breedink of the people, the second is laziness, and the third is dishonesty. The breeding of people is a most vital factor. I have been breeding cattle for a number of years, but if I were to breed cattle on the same lines aS the present-day world is being bred, I shoud M bankrupt within two years,”
