TEACHERS’ SALARIES
INCREASES SOUGHT When moving a remit at the annual meeting yesterday of the New Zealand Educational Institute, declaring that a salary scheme based on efficiency and service was an urgent necessity, Mr. W. W. Rowntree (North Canterbury) suggested that all teachers commence at a salary of £l3O, that salary to consist of two parts, £7O for service and £6O for efficiency.
He suggested also that a yearly in-
crement for service up to 20 years be given, the increment to male assistants to be £lO, to female assistants £7, and to all head teachers £10; that all named male assistants be given a special addition of £5O to the ordinary salary, such addition to be given also to widows who had children under 18 to support; and that head teachers receive a special allowance, grade I to receive £2O, grade 2 £3O, grade 3 £5O, grade 4 £BO, grade 5 £llO, grade 6 £l4O, and grade £7 £l7O. Mr. F. A. Garry (Auckland) said the question of salaries was a very important one. He suggested that Mr. Rowntree add to the remit, “and that the incoming executive be asked to press for early consideration of the matter by the Department.” The suggestion was agreed to, the remit, as amended, being carried unanimously.
