SUBURBAN BUS SERVICES

PROTEST MEETING AT SEATOUN

“The Karaka bus service has been a most unfortunate service from the start,” said Mr. W. L. Palmer at a meeting held last night to protest against the curtailment of the bus service, onder the old Miramar Borough Council, he continued, they had a service by a fleet of antiquated buses which were continually breaking down. Now the council had given them a. good bus, but they were going to curtail the running of the 1.20 p.m. bus, which was of very great utility, especially to women, and he failed to see why this bus was taken off. If the council decided to reintroduce the 1.20 bus they would be asked for an assurance that they would not interfere with the existing service. There were other matters which they would like to see remedied, such as the overcrowding of the morning bus and the absence of concession tickets, which would help the patronage of the buses. Sir. J. N. Wallace, chairman of the Civic League, said that the matter of bus services was before a joint committee of the Civic League and the Eastern Suburbs League, at present. One of the principal points stressed by the council was the loss on the buses. That loss as mainly due to the low revenue; far more so than to high operating costs. Mr. A. E. Mabin said that the service was worse to-day than it yas under the Ferry Company 20 years ago. and if tlie council was going to curtail the service it should allow eompetitiou. It was not a question of losing on the bus, because it was well patronised. It was decided to appoint a deputation to wait on the council to request them to reinstate the 1,20 p.m. bus.
