PHILATELIC “FIND”
EARLY “FULL FACE”
ISSUE
A Christchurch firm of stamp-dealers is reported to have discovered a hitherto unknown variety of the early “Full Face’’ issue of New Zealand stamps. It was found among a small batch of stamps that were bought for a few shillings, and it has been declared to be worth at least £5OO. The early stamps were issued imperforate since the Government did not possess a perforating machine, but various firms perforated their own stamps, and among these Messrs. Ferguson and Mitchell, of Dunedin, used a machine which gave a perforation gauging 13. The discovery is a copy of the Id. orange-vermilion stamp without watermark, issued between 1856 and 1862, and perforated by this machine. Two other values of the same issue, the 2d. blue and the 6d. brown, are known in this condition, and it is stated that only three copies of the latter are in the possession of collectors. The latest addition to the set is in good condition.
