FORTHCOMING TOURNAMENTS
The monthly meeting of the New Zealand Golf Council was held on Monday afternoon, when there were present Messrs. W. E. A. Gill (chairman), Sir Alexander Roberts, and Messrs. H. R. Balneavis, W. A. Kiely, M. J. Crombie, and A. D. S. Duncan. With regard to subscriptions which will become payable by clubs for the coming financial year, it was resolved “That the council’s interpretation of the subscription rule is that the levy is applicable only to ordinary members and those with mid-week or limited rights, and does not apply to non-playing members, honorary members, country members or junior members, when the lastnamed ciass pay a reduced rate of subscription.” The following new clubs which had made application were elected members of the association: The Awatere Golf Club, Seddon; the Buller Golf Club, Westport; and the Burnside Golf Club, To Kuiti. Quite a number of other clubs have been inquiring recently with regard to membership in the association and it is anticipated that there will be a few more elected before the close of the financial year on July 31. Yesterday's elections bring the total number of clubs in the association to 141. The North End Golf Club, Timaru, advise the association that tbe club is disbanding and that a new club has been formed called the Glen-iti Golf Club, which will be joining up with the association almost immediately. Dates of forthcoming tournaments that have been reported to the secretary are as follow: Hastings, June 2,4, and 5; Masterton, June 2,4, and 5; Dannevirke, August 9, 10 and 11; Rotorua, August 28 to 31; Takapau, August 29 to 30 (ladies’), 31 to September 1 (men’s) ; North Otago (Oamaru), October 22; Hamilton (South Auckland championship), October 4,5, and 6; New Zealand championship tournament (Dunedin), October 10 to 20; Manawatu, October 22, 23 and 24; Seafield (Wanganui), October 20, 22 and 23. Standardisation of Courses. The Secretary reported that in response to his letter to Mr. C. H. Redhead inquiring upon what terms he would undertake the fixing of all the scratch scores, Mr. Redhead immediately telegraphed and wrote to the effect that he would be pleased to undertake the work and would make no charge. The chairman reported that he had written personally to Mr. Redhead thanking him for his very generous offer, and a hearty vote of thanks was also passed by the council. The secretary reported that he had already sent two lots of forms to Mr. Redhead, the first lot of which Mr. Redhead has just completed and returned. The secretary reported that excellent work was being done this year by the association’s professionals, both John Lambje and James Watt being completely booked up to the middle of August, with every probability of further bookings to the end of the golf season in the country clubs. GUNSON IN ENGLAND. (Australian Press Association.) London, May 7. On St. George's course, Sandwich, in the qualifying round of the open golf championship, the New Zealander F. Gunson was partnered with tbe former Cambridge captain Rex Hartley. He was steady for the first five holes, but after that did badly. He did not return his card. G. W.
