BASKETBALL

ANNUAL MEETING OF ASSOCIATION

The annual meeting of the Ladies Basketball Association was held recently, nineteen clubs being represented. The retiring president (Miss R. Gardner) presided. Officers for the ensuing season were elected as follow:—Patrons, Miss Dunlop, Messrs. McLay, Shallcrass, and Waddilove; president, Mrs. Muir: vice-presidents, Mrs. W. G. Campbell, Misses C. Armstrong and H. Roberts; secretary. Mr. S. Campbell; assistant secretary, Miss M. -Wood; treasurer, Miss E. Storie: nonofficial members, Misses Gilchrist, Moods, Bowman, and Tait. The following were elected lite-members: Misses B. Armstrong, G. Stark, R. Gardner, and Mr. W. G. Campbell. After considerable discussion on the regrading of teams, it was decided that the intermediate grade be formed into eight grades and the teams graded accordwas drawn to the acute shortage of referees, and a strong appeal was made to the clubs to give this matter their earnest consideration. The annual report stated that the registered teams playing this year number,, 81 as against 71 in 1926. Grounds were utilised at Newtown, Berhampore, Soutlr Wellington, Clyde Quay, Lyall Baj\ and South Miramar, Hutt School, Hutt 1 alley High School, Petono School, Bryant, Maj, and Bell Co., Wesley Hutt, Wesley Petonc. Knox, Johnsonville, Northland, -and Wei-. lington East Girls’ College. ' The association is desirons of having a number or hard courts laid down, on which all matches could be played, thus centralising basketball, and eliminating to a degree, the question of referees. .The; executive has made representations, through the Sports Protection League, .to the City Council regarding the provis on of these permanent grounds, but to date nothing has been , done to further the idea. A new senior B grade was formed, and a champicnship cup for this.was presented by Miss Armstrong. -:' A cup was also presented to this grade lorrI or r seven-a-side tournament by Mr, Campbell. ■ There are four grades, viz., senior A, senior B, intermediate, and junior. The two latter grades are split into three sections each. The net balance at the end of 1927 was estimated a *“The standard of play in Wellington is improving, although slowh T , added the report. “One hindering factor is the great number of small clubs, manywith only one team. In these teams often will be found girls whose play would win them a place in a senior team playing probable in intermediate grade, or with, other girls whose play reaches only junior standard, resulting in individual play instead of team work. Uns could be obviated, to some, extent, by combining several. of clubs and a careful grading of the players into teams.” Regret was expressed at the loss of the services of Miss Armstrong, who was forced to leave on account of a nervous breakdown; also the loss of Miss Finch '(treasurer), who left to go to Africa to'be married. ; FIXTURES FOR SATURDAY.
