“In addition to being a good shot, you need to have a good dog,” said an Auckland sportsman who sampled the delights of duck-shooting on the opening day with a fair amount of success (says an exchange). Twenty years ago one of the favourite duck-shooting grounds within fairly handy range of tlie city was the winding reaches of the Kaipara River, in the vicinity of Obirangi. One of the most successful gatherers of ducks was an elderly foreigner, whose sole equipment on the opening day of the season was a sack. He owned a black retriever dog, which had more than a local reputatiou. A dead or wounded duck -was unerringly retrieved, and brought to the bank, thence to the bag. The dog was also highly skilled at locating catches of dead ducks planted by sportsmen, and at looting slyly and silently a sportsman’s game bag the animal had no equal.
The Rev. William Boyd, composer of the music to the famous hymn, “Fight the Good Fight,’’ died on February 16 at Ins residence in London, at • the age ■ of 85 years.
