THE RACING WORLD

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By

“The Watcher.”)

Nominations for the winter meeting of the Otaki Maori Racing Club will close on Friday at 8 p.m.

Stormy is to be schooled over hurdles, and is one of the most likely recruits that could be named.

Lochella was schooled over the Steeplechase fences at Wlngatui on Saturday morning.

Holders of licenses under the New Zealand Racing Conference must put in their applications for renewal by .May 31, through the district committees.

Kawini is a notable absentee from Great Northern entries. When he ran two sterling races at the Franklin meeting in March it appeared as if he was going to be a very lit horse when the jumping season opened. This supposition was dispelled, however, when be subsequently went amiss at the Ohinemuri fixture. R. Hall, Kawini’s trainer, informed an Auckland writer that the Formative gelding is yet far from his best, but it he continues to progress it is probable that he will be given an outing at the Great Northern meeting.

The Te Rapa trainer, .T. F. Tutchcn. will have a good-sized team to prepare for jumping events ahead. Prince Rufus, Pouri, and Peter .Maxwell are more or less tried campaigners, while Gala Day and Stormy will be tutored iu this branch of stake earning.

Candidates in SI. ,T. Carroll’s team, who arc being prepared for the winter jumping season, are Glcna Bay, Hangawera, and Atlienry. Glcna Bay, who is by Romeo from the Martian mare Martigues, has not raced since he was a two-year-old. He is now in the sixth year, and is an upstanding type, well fitted for the jumping game at which he has had some schooling at Te Rapa. Hangawera is one of the few representatives of Chesterfield . (the sire of Beau Cavalier) in commission. Earlier in the season Hangawera, who has only recently been taken up again, was a winner over hurdles and also iir highweight company. Athcnry has had very little public experience as a hurdler, but the Mullingar chestnut shows some promise. o

Master Clarence is making, good progress under A. McAuley's charge, and is galloping well on the Riccarton tracks.

It is understood (says the “Press") that there will be some new blood included in the nominations for the Canterbury Jockey Club Committee, to be elected shortly, and that a ballot will be necessary this year.

Mr. A. C. Hanlon (president of the Dunedin Jockey Club) was amongst the spectators at Forbury Park, 'but (says “Sentinel”) it is feared that he did not see many horses eligible to strengthen the fields nt the AVingatui cross-country meeting, which takes place in the near future. ■ :

Day Guard and Bright Comet, who are to race at the Egmont meeting, have arrived at Hawcra in charge of their own-er-trainer, J. M. Zimmerman. Day Guard ran well at the Waikato meeting, and would have been closer up than third in the high-weight event on the first day but for getting away badly. The Day Comet—Keep Watch gelding must be respected iu, his coming engagements. Bright Comet may be'better'suited by the southern'; company, although her form ,is not good. Paganelli and Macroom, who are to be turned out for a spell in the Taranaki district, accompanied the Ngaruawahia pair on the trip.

Tea Time, who had a halt culled in his preparation after racing at Pacroa in mid-Mareli, has been iu work again on the tracks at Te Aroha. Tea Time, who has good form to his credit this season, figures among the field entered for the Borough Handicap and the Winter Oats Handicap, the chief six furlong events at the coming meeting at 'Wanganui. Tea Time’s efforts in open sprints this season have been sufficiently attractive to earn him a recommendation it’ the Southern trip is fulfilled.

The following extract from the London “Daily Mirror” should be of interest to the New Zealand Racing Association and the sporting public:—“An almost huniSn totalisator that cannot make mistakes, is fraud-proot and fool-proof, can deliver tickets at the rate of one a second, and is portable, has been invented by Mr. K. Wallace, of British Automatic Totulisators, Ltd., Wardour Street, W. This wonderful machine, which has been inspected and commended by oflicials of .the Jockey Cl»b, is the result of many years’ experiments by Mr. Wallace in his search for the totalisator which ‘cannot go wrong.’ On a racecourse the ‘headquarters’ of this tote, will be a huge indicator ; showing the number of bets made on each horse, while as many ‘registers’ as arc necessary can be placed around the course, where bets can be made. The' registers arc all electrically connected with the indicator, and immediately a bet is made,' it is automatically recorded on the indicator. With this system it is possible to handle 40,000 or more bets for each race, while the apparatus' is so simple that ,it can be dismantled' and carted from one course to another. An ingenious scheme has been adopted to foil swindlers. Each ticket is printed in four colours, which can be altered by the pressure of a lever at the operator’s keyboard. These colours can therefore lie varied at will, for each race, thus eliminating the possibility of forgerv. Immediately the race is over, the dividends payable to backers can be announced on the board, do estimation by nnv human agency being necessary. In fact, the only part of the machine which can go wrong or make mistakes is the operator himself, and as ins Job is merely to press keys like those on a typewriter, it is unlikely that there will be many mistakes even m turn quarter.” There does not appear ticket at the will of the operator strikes one as an important ailvancc, as nltll the New Zealand machine the ticket ioils have to be printed beforehand, and the <- have been occasions upon m Inch fraiiun lent use has been made of these tickets. With a colour scheme that can be altulCU in an instant, it would be possible to delay the colour combination until he last moment, and fraud under such citcumstances would appear almost, impossible. The estimation of the dividends without, human agency, which must include the subtraction of the bettin„ taA, Is a claim upon which a little more information would be interesting.

It is stated that Mr. G. A. Reid may take his objection to the owner ot White Wings receiving tlie stakes lor the Jnslow Stakes at tlie last. Auckland meetin" to the New Zealand Racing Conleient’C. ■lt will be remembered that Lucy Rose ran second in tlie event, and tlie objection is based on Hie b'r<?. l ' nd . v it is alleged the owner of W lute Av nus did not supervise tlie training ot the filly in order to qualify as owiicr-traiiicr. Mr. Reid lost his appeal before the Distuet Committee.

Arikitoa, who occupied third place at tlie conclusion of the Ohinewai Maiden Handicap on the concluding day of the Waikato meeting, displayed some pace and is likely to improve with racing. Arikitoa, who is a nice stamp, is a threc-vear-old chestnut gelding by V.arplano from a mare by Mamapoto. He is rained at To. Awamutu by I'. E. Loom!’ tor the Taumarunui sportsman, Sir. K. H. G. Simmons, whose colours have boon carried with some success by Diack cruiser.

Tlie presence of Mr. Howard Bruce s American steeplechaser Billy Barton, in this year's Grand National, was responsible for a big influx of visitors to England from the United States and from Canada. Accommodation in- Liverpool was limited, and the various steamship companies made arrangements lor the w passengers to stay on board tlie liners. The Canadian Pacific Railway Company made arrangements for passengers who so desired to be accommodated ou board the Montcalm on tlie Thursday .night before the Grand National was run.

ELLERSLIE TRAINING NOTES CANDIDATES FOR JUMPING HONOURS Dominion Special Service. Auckland, May 8. With the near approach of the jumping season more horses are being schooled at Ellerslie, and after a slack period Tuesday morning's work,,was rather interest '"Lord Bruce jumped the steeplechase fences on the flat in dashing style. No fault can be found with this horse’s jumping, but he is a veteran and unlikely to improve on past performances, which have been mediocre. ' Cool stimulants, who lias been oft the scene for a long time, shaped fairly well over the pony hurdles. He has been given a lot of work away from the tracks. Salamander, who may do better as a hurdler than on the fiat, showed 'up well over two small and two big hurdles. Areheno and I’ekatahi belli gave good displays in a round of the hurdles. Arcbeno is a nippy jumper who might win a hack hurdle race early. Master Clements, the latest recruit at Ellerslie, showed promise over the pony hurdles. .... Quincoma was much better than t.lenetta in a round of the hurdles. Quineoma’s fencing docs not yet. show finish, but he is shaping very nicely and promises to make a good hurdler. Jfarblc Mount-.and Odin cleared two hurdles in good style, the former continuing over four more without mistake. Neither is yet worthy of special mcn--1 Wee Marble, Clockwork and Pompelus cleared the steeplechase fences on the flat without any of them being particularly impressive. Wee Marble is a smart fencer, but seems to lack stamina. The Northern horse, Fiery Lad, is now trained by R. Hall.' He hit the first fence of the double, but gave an otherwise good display for a novice over the steeplechase fences on the flat. Rahepoto and Segment left for Hawera yesterday. The former is expected to run prominently, but local 'sportsmen. have not much regard for Segment, although ho has a good dash of pace. • Lady’s Boy worked freely on Tuesday. He is booked for 'Wanganui, and W. Tozer.will take him South on Monday. On recent form Town Bank should race well at Hawera, particularly if the track is soft. He is a lit horse at present. Kingfleld was lame after racing at Te Rapa, and at latest was still showing signs of soreness. Kawini’s absence from the Great Northerns was duo to that horse not being as forward as could be wished. He is, however, training on well, and will most likely be seen out on the second and third days of the June fixture.

j. Caramick docs not often leave Auckland, but the local light-weight will be at Hawera and Wanganui. He will ride Oration in the Mcßae Memorial. On Thursday 8. Henderson goes to Hawera to ride Ilaeremai and Mister Gamp. It. McTavish will miss Hawera,. but will go South to Wanganui. Llandudno's defection from the Cornwall Handicap was due to W. Stone’s charge breaking down . rather badly at Te Rapa. Stone hopes to get the big fellow right again after a good spell. ' RICCARTON NOTES ASHBURTON CANDIDATES Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, May 8. ; Conditions were very favourable for training operations at Riccarton to-day, the inside grass track being in good order after the recent rain. Practically all the horses engaged at the Ashburton meeting next Saturday were given fast work, and some interesting gallops were executed.

Tilson) and Raiiglawlmo (G Salt) were companions in a round ot the hurdles, the former giving a clean and fast exhibition. Rangiawhao’s eftort was only fair. „ Flnora galloped seven furlongs in 1.33, and her stable mates, Lytup and Cynelli. took 1.0 TO run five furlongs. Aberfeldv (I. Tilson) and Onflamb (E.Shaw) executed one of the fastest rounds of the hurdle track seen for some time. Both jumped faultlessly and kept together throughout, Aberfcldy appearing to be going the better nt the finish. . Siitrap has rejoined the active brigade at Riccarton and was given easy work tO Count Cavour has also been recommissioned and forms one of the afternoon Aberfeldy’s engagement in the Autumn Handicap at Ashburton was not continued and lie will probably be taken north next week to race at the Wanganui winter meeting and later at Ellerslie. 1. Tilson will ride the Quin Abbey gelding in all his engagements.

A Press Association message from Sydney states that a Jockey named Puckeridgo and tlie racehorse Clilrmo have been disqualified for life. At a country meeting at Wyong, Puckeridgo used an electric battery. The horse bolted and wou.
