DAVIS CUP TENNIS
AUSTRALIA V. ITALY
CRAWFORD DEPRESSED
SUFFERING FROM INFLUENZA
(Australian Press Association.) '• London, May 4.
The Australian Press Association s special representative at Genoa reports that the Australian camp is more hopeful, following au afternoon’s practice. Crawford showed a glimpse of his true form with beautiful ground strokes and forecourt volleys. The only. doubt is whether his influenza cold will sap his staying power if the match with Morpurgo exceeds three sets. Patterson, told the Australian Preys Association that Crawford was hittilfg cleanlier to-day, though he was not as active as he was last week, when his form was brilliant. “We arc now more hopeful that he will rise to the occasion to-morrow,” said Patterson. The weather is perfect, and Genoa is doing its utmost to honour the Australians, including the erection of a special flagstaff for a locally-made Australian flag. There is intense interest, red placards, with the words, “Coppa Davis, being displayed everywhere. Sunday’s doubles will be a gala occasion, and there should not be any underrating of the Italians, who last year had a better tally of sets in the games against France than the Americans, while Stefane has scored four . match points against Cochet on the Riviera in the present season. Gaslini, who is bespectacled turned up this morning. He is a great stylist, but by no means consistent. The Australians may be relied on to set the tunc, not to dance. In view of the Continental vogue for line disputes it is satisfactory to know that Prowse has enlisted reliable and hot linesmen. Crawford is slightly better, and will be definitely playing to-morrow. Indeed, Patterson has no other choice. His colleagues are endeavouring to cheer up Crawford, hoping to get him on the court in the same mood as when he beat Kozeluh at Rome. If so, Morpurgo will have to fight for his life, but Crawford has still some way to go to emerge from the doldrums of depression. (Australian Press Assn.—United Service.) (Rec.
