HOCKEY

EXCITING GAMES WITNESSED KARORI BEAT WESLEY HUIA BEAT PETONE Weather conditions for the hockey competitions on Saturday were perfect, and the grounds were in good order. A great deal of interest was taken in the Karori-Wesley fixture nt Karori Park, this game giving the onlookers all they wanted so far as speed and excitement were concerned. All the games were worth watching, and it was noticeable that the teams had all started to settle down and to combine better. Y.M.C.A. (senior A), who had a bye, played a friendly match against ’Varsity (senior B), who won by default from Training College. The game resulted in a draw, the score being 2-ali. Wesley scored their first goal almost immediately, after which Karori took the ball down to the Wesley goal, and equalised the score. Boys, the Wesley ’keeper, stopped several attempts at scoring by Karori, and soon after, Wesley, as the result of a good attack, added another goal to their total. Karori got the ball again, gave Boys some anxious moments, and finally sent the ball into a corner of the net. The half-time score was 2-all. After the interval play centred in the Wesley area most of the time, and Karori were successful in scoring two more goals. Scorers for Karori were McGavin, Roberts, Robb, and Nimmo; and for Wesley, Freethey and Brown. The referee was Mr. A. G. Edwards.

’VARSITY V. PETONE.

Petone, playing their first game m the senior A grade, were not good enough for ’Varsity, but for all that, the team showed considerable promise. Early in the game 'Varsity took the ball up to the Petone area, but it was some time before they scored. Petone soon got their own back, and scored as the result of some neat solo work. By the time the interval was reached, the Varsity men had added two more goals to their account. Just after the interval Petone netted, but their victory was short-lived, for ’Varsity got hold of the ball, _ and kept it in the Petone area practically all through the spell. By the time the final whistle sounded they had added four more goals to their total, making the score: 'Varsity, 7; Petone, 3. Scorers for’ Varsity were: Sykes (3), Simpson (2), McDonald, and McLeod. Malcolm scored both goals for Petone. Mr. W. A. Scott refereed.

HUTT BEAT WELLINGTON. Hutt’s first game this season was played against Wellington, whom they ieat by three goals to one. During the first spell, Hutt were attacking practically all the time, with the result that the half-time score was Hutt 2, Wellington 1. After the interval, Wellington rallied considerably, and play went up to the region of the Hutt goal. . However, Wellington got the ball again and shot it down to the other end of the field, and after a short time Hutt netted its third goal. Towards the end of the game Wellington were successful in scoring. With the exception of four men, all the Hutt players were men who have been promoted to the senior A grade this year. Lusty scored the three goals for Hutt, and Joblin scored Wellington’s goal. The referee was Mr. R. Lloyd.

SENIOR B KARORI-WESLEY.

Fairly even play prevailed throughout this game, which, though reasonably fast, lacked finish. All the players were inclined to overrun the ball, especially the Karori men. After about twenty minutes’ play, Wesley scored from a melee outside the Karori goal. Play, tor the most part, centred round the Karori end of the field. The Wesley forwards did good work all through the game.' Just before half-time, a Karori man got hold of the ball, and as the result of a number of neat passes, Karori scored. Play in the second spell was much the same, but neither team could break through the other’s defence, until just before time, when Wesley scored a neat goal, making the final score: Wesley 2. Karori 1. Burder and Gardner scored for Wesley, and Whithair for Karori. Mr. R. P. Staples refereed.

HUTT V. Y.M.C.A.

The game at Kilbirnte between Hutt and Y..M.C.A. resulted in a draw, the score being 3-ali. The ball travelled about the field from end to end during the first half, Hutt scoring twice, once from a scramble in front of the goal (A. Ross), and later from a combined forward rush (L. Loader). At the opening of the second spell Hutt were consistently in the Y.M.C.A. territory, until Hodgkinson made the Hutt total 3. Y.M.C.A. rallied, and after a good forward rush C. Abernethy cut in from the left wing to score. Y.M.C.A. continued the attack, and K. Gibbings added another goal to their total. Shortly before the end P.
