NELSON MEETING CONCLUDED NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By

“The Watcher.")

NELSON MEETING RAMESES BEATS THE SPRINTERS REDWOOD MEMORIAL AVON BY CERF Dominion Special Service. Nelson, May 5. The Nelson races were concluded at Richmond to-day in beautiful weather before a good crowd. The course was in much better order than on the opening day. The Redwood Memorial was won by Cerf and the Flying Handicap by Raineses. During the day £10,7511 was put. through the machine, making £17.943 10s. for the meeting. In the three days last year the sum was £27,637. TRIAL STAKES. Imarosebud was backed to a short price in the Trial Stakes, and after looking hopelessly placed in the run to the straight won well. Dancing Star and The Dove were the leaders most of the way, with Imarosebud last, but at the home turn Daly drew the stick and the favourite responded well and soon had the measure of the field, winning eventually by two lengths from Dancing Star. Handsome was a length away third, and The Dove fourth. L. Daly, rider of the winner, tvas suspended for a month for interference. MAITAI TROT. Native Hero was a solid favourite for the Malta! Trot. Beta Nelson led Sea Nymph to the straight, and Sea Nymph then came on and won by a length_ from Audubon Child, who beat Reta Nelson by a neck for second place. Crusader and Dillon’s Pride were next. REDWOOD MEMORIAL. The Redwood Memorial was a great race. Discourse and Cerf were the best backed of the field. There was a long delay at the -barrier, several of the field being unruly. Cerf, who was one of the offenders, began from the rails, and got away well. He was in charge along the back with Gamecock; Steel Rar was next, and then came Lady Gay and Discourse. The field bunched at the half-mile and Discourse improved her position, but was not going easily. Cerf led Lady' Gay into the straight, and in the run home won by half a length, with Steel Bar another length away third. Twink was fourth, and Gamecock last. Cerf was improved by his race on the first day, but Discourse, who had not done well on the trip, ran badly. TAHUNA HACK HANDICAP. Mark Mint was a pronounced favourite for the Tahuna Hack Handicap. Borsalene and Mark Mint went to the front at the start and led from Smithereens and Freezeout. Smithereens and Mark Mint were first to turn for home, but Freezeout challenged and beat both of them, winning by a length from Mark Mint, with Smithereens two lengths away and Borsalene a fair fourth. FLYING HANDICAP. Bettors in general received another reverse when Kilperon failed in the Flying Handicap, for which he was a hot favourite. Raineses ran to the front in the first ocuple of furlongs and led to the straight from Kilperon and Miss Pat. Barneses ran on strongly and beat Kilperon home by a length, with Miss Pat half a length away third and TaArina several lengths away at the head of the next bunch. Miss Pat did not have a clear passage in the straight, Otherwise she might have bceu second. WHAKATU TROT. The Whakatu Trot was a runaway race for most of the way, though it was close enough at the finish. Star Cluster rushed to the front nt the start and was twenty lengths clear along the back, where Audubon Child commenced a great race. He mowed down the field, but Star Cluster beat him home by half a length, with Reta Nelson another half length away third and Crusader fourth. A protest against Audubon phild for crossing Reta Nelson in the straight was dismissed. STOKE HANDICAP. Mark Mint was a warm' - favourite for the Stoke Hack Handicap, and Second Thought was the best backed of the others. The Dove led to the straight from Mark Mint and Second Thought, and in the straight Mark Mint had to do his best to win by a neck from The Dove, with Rash third and Second Thought, Smithereens and Atone next. GLEN MEMORIAL. There was a good pool on the final event -of the meeting—the Gleu Memorial. Royal Game was< favourite, and there was big support for Tip Tree and Lady Gay. Royal Game and Tip Tree began well, and Tip Tree soon took command, and led to the straight from Royal Game and Corn Rigs, with Lady Gay near the back of the field. The finish was a good one between Royal Game and Tip Tree, Royal Game doing best in the last furlong and winning by a head. Two and a half lengths back came Bissau, who headed off Lady Gay in the last few strides to get third money.

NOTES AND COMMENTS ("By The Watcher.’’) Nominations for the winter meeting of the Otaki Maori Racing Club will close on Friday at 8 pan. Polyphemus is being schooled over fences at Hawera and, according to all reports, is shaping very well. Comical has been taken over to Hawera from Hawke's Bay to fulfil engagements this week.

It is reported that, the joint owners of Moa Bird refused a good offer for her a few days ago.

Maunga is schooling well al Hastings and with the racing he had at the Hawke's Bay autumn meeting he should be well forward for early engagements.

Aberfeldy is regarded at Rieearton as well treated with 9.11 in the Great Northern Hurdles and 9.6 in the Great. Northern Steeplechase. It he goes to Ellerslie he will probably race at Wanganui en route.

Kick Off is being ridden to hounds in Hawke's Bay and is said to be jumping well. lie would take some beating in hack and hunters’ steeplechases.

Banjuke is schooling in very satisfactory style at Marton. Banjuke ran and won in promising fashion during the last steeplechase season, and with another year on to bis age and the experience behind him he should do good service for Mr. Riddiford again this year.

F. Lind had hopes tliai Elysianor would make a good steeplechaser, but. the Elysian gelding has failed to stand up to his work and will likely be off the scene for some time.

Huikai is the latest recruit to the ranks of the hurdlers.

There is a possibility of the Wanganui Jockey Club holding a one-day meeting only in September, but this depends on their being given permission to hold a one-day fixture on January 22. The Foxton Club for years past have raced on January 22. but intend holding their annual meeting a week earlier next year so as to avoid clashing with the ■Wellington Cup fixture. The committee of the 'Wanganui Club consider that, the Trentham meeting would not interfere to any great extent with

the meeting at Wanganui. September 15 is the date proposed for the spring races, if the alteration is agreed to. iu which case the Wanganui Cup meeting would be held on March 7 and 9.

Solfcrite put up a good gallop over six furlongs at Rieearton on Saturday morning, running the distance in Imin. lijsee.

One of the latest aspirants for jninping honours is Quincoma, who has been placed in R. Hall's stable at Ellerslie to receive a course of schooling. The Quin Abbev gelding has been nominated for the hack hurdle events at Wanganui, and may be given an early opportunity of racing over hurdles. When he gains a bit of experience Quincoma may make good as a hurdler, as he comes from a family that lias produced some good jumpers.

For a beginner, Rahepoto did fairly well over hurdles last winter, and he promises to be even better. this year, says a northern writer. Considering that it was his first run for some months he pleased by running on into third place in the Frankton Hurdles. After this effort many were waiting to back the Maniapoto 'gelding on the second day, but he was not produced. There is nothing amiss, and he is booked for a trip to Hawera and 'Wanganui, so his admirers will have an early opportunity of supporting him. Rahepoto will be an improved horse for the race he had. and is nicely placed in the Tongahoe Hurdles at Hawera.

Goshawk may shortly be taken up again by J. M. Cameron.

Bcnuanec is back in work at Hustings. He sliould be ready for some of the late winter or early spring meetings, and he may be a Winter Cup possibility.

Merry Damon is now being trained at Hastings by IV. Griffiths. .Merry Damon was a good performer a few seasons back, when trained at Ellerslie. He usually runs well under welter weights, so that he may pick up a race during the winter.

At almost every race meeting nowadavs at least one event on the programme carries with it, in addition to the prizemonev, a gold or silver cup, which goes to the owner of the winner, and very frequently the club, or a keen enthusiast gives a gold-mounted whip to the jockey. But rarely does it happen that the trainer, the man who is responsible for presenting the horse in a condition which enables it to win, receives anything more than a few words of congratulation (says the Auckland “Star”). Surely the trainer

who Ims had all the’ work of getting an animal ready to win, does as much as the jockey, who very often only has to sit in the saddle and enjoy what is often termed an “armchair ride.” At the recent Avondale meeting to mark the occasion of the opening of the new course, the rider of the winner E Ludlow, was presented with a whip. Init the trainer of the horse had to be content, with a handshake. At Te Kapa again, in the Storey Memorial, Mr. r. G Harper, owner of Valkon, received a gold cup, E. Keesing, who rode the iiorse. was presented with a gold-mount-ed whip, but the. trainer, A. E. Cox, was not so fortunate, and nothing came his way Racing men are very proud of trophies won by the horses, and it hardly seems the fair thing for trainers to be' left out so consistently.

A two-year-old filly by Cynic from Royal .Moment, therefore a sister to Royal Time and a half-sister io Royal Damon, has joined H. S. Greene’s team at Hastings. The owner of the filly, Mrs. A. R. Hutchinson, is reported to have recently refused a substantial offer for a gelding foal by Hunting Song from Royal Moment.

J. MeCombe has the three-year-old Despot, moving along in useful tasks, and he will be raced at the Ashburton meeting next week. This is the only horse he is working at present. Court Jester liad to be spelled on account of lameness. after his trip to Trentham for the Marlborough meeting, while Amorist has given no encouragement lately to keep him in training.

RICCARTON TRAINING .NOTES

Dominion Special Service. Saturday, May 5. Although there was nothing outstanding in training operations at Riccarton this morning, the work was nevertheless of an interesting nature in view of the Ashburton meeting on Saturday next and the fixtures following in the space of the next month. The inside grass track was open and all the fast work was confined to this, which, owing to short measurement, was responsible for fast times.

Sagittarius credted a good impression by galloping five furlongs in Imin. Ssee. Amourette finished ahead of Crossbow over half a mile covered in 51 sec. Sea Gay and Claymore (Greyspear— The Spike) occupied 51 2-ssec. for the same journey. Polydectes appeared to hold Battle Colours safely .at the end of six furlongs, taking Imin. Iflsec. Zaragoza and Gay Crest finished abreast after traversing five furlongs in Imin. 4sec. The latter two-year-old < dding by Shillinglee,„the property of F. D. Jones, is improving with every gallop and looks likely to turn out more than useful.

Sprinkler and Aberfeldy were restricted to a four-furlong task, taking 51 l-ssec.

Lancer and Gold Mint finished together well clear of Assurance after traversing five furlongs in Imin. 4 4-ssec. Wreath of Myrtle and_ Royal Land executed a similar task in Imin. ssec. ■ Solferite gave a pleasing display by finishing in front of Malmsey at the end of six furlongs, run in the good time of Imin. 15 l-ssec.

Amor and Honeycomb strode over the same ground in Imin. 10 2-ssec., finishing together. The Bailiff and The Viscount were not fully extended to run four furlongs in 52 l-ssec.

Cynelli and Lytup registered Imin. ssec. for five furlongs. Despot had a slight advantage over Bronsteli, with Skyquest beaten off, at the conclusion of five furlongs in Imin. 3 2-ssec.

Gay Queen (I. Tilson) gave a satisfactory display over four hurdles, and Oriflamb (E. Shaw) executed a simi’ar task in a faultless manner.

Following on Nincompoop’s unsatisfactory effort to negotiate the pony hurdles on Thursday, no further attempt is to be made with him as a hurdle aspirant, and he will now undergo another preparation for flat racing, with the Dunedin winter meeting in view. Solferite showed a glimpse of his last year’s form in his gallon this morning, and provided he remains sound, he will make a bold attempt to add a second Winter Cup to his credit. He will probably be raced at the Amberley meeting at the end of this month, and will then be taken to the Dunedin winter meeting.

With Charlatan a non-competitor this season in steeplechase events, Riccarton cannot boast of a likely candidate for cross-country honours. Aberfeldy is the only jumper who may fill the post, but he appears to have good prospects over the small fences, and his efforts may be confined to this branch, in the meantime at any rate.

Amongst the yearlings being handled by Riccarton trainers, F. Christmas is busy with the Hunting Song—Royal Mary colt purchased by Martarma’s owner for 150 guineas at the Trentham sales. J. McCoinbe has eased up Amorist and Court Jester, and now has only Despot in active commission. He has, however, a yearling colt in hand by Chief Ruler from Leading Lady Assurance has improved in appearance since joining T. Lloyd’s stable, but evidently he has sacrificed his galloping ability for looks, as he seems to Have lost form. His inglorious display in a gallop this morning was far from encouraging.
