WIDENING THORNDON QUAY
IS LAND BEING TAKEN ILLEGALLY? Mr. J. L. Treadwell appeared on behalf of Mr. James Dealy at the City Council meeting last night to object to the taking of his land at Thorndon Quay for street-widening purposes. Mr. Treadwell urged that the impropriety of taking the land from the moral point of view as well as the legal would be apparent. The land of an adjoining owner was being taken for widening put poses, while his client’s land was only being taken to assist the council to obtain relief in regard to compensation paid for other land. The purpose for which the land was being taken was foreign to the provisions of the Act under which the council was operating, for his client’s land was not actually required for widening or diverting the broadway, and he challenged the legality of the council’s proposal The Mayor (Mr. G. A. Troup) intimated that the objection would be noted. An objection was also made by Mr. A. B. Fitchett to the taking of his land for waterworks purposes at Karori.
