There is said to be a distinct reluctr ance on the part of bailiffs and constables especially in country districts, to carry out the new law which provides that summonses, excepting judgment summonses. may be served by registered letter (says the Auckland "Sun”) And there is naturally fin even greater reluctance on the part of those served with summonses to pay "mileage” at the rate of Is. a mile. Why should a debtor in a place remote frgm a police station or a bailiff’s headquarters pay mileage that may amount to a considerable sum. when he can quite efficiently be served hy post? This "perk’/ to the server of summonses has been a more or less open scandal, and it has inflicted very great hardship on many who have had to pay "mileago” in addition to the ordinary cost of a summons.
