THE ENGLISH PRESS
Sir,—The recent- motion in the House | of Commons relative to the evils winch j have fallen on the English Press, once so ably conducted, and independent, will have the entire sympathy of at least Home-born people in this country, and probably of many others not so born. It* is very disquieting to have to realise that of all the leading London newsnapers published daily only two, the "Morning Post." and. after a temporary lapse, the "Times" (easily and for many years past the two best), arc maintaining the-high traditions of the English Press. From a strictly commercial standpoint, the others are presumably run with success; but publish-, ing only the "stuff that sells" is not the only or the highest duty of journalism.' It, seems strange, bn l so far as I am aware, not a single library in Wellington files the "Morning Post," and only one files both the daily and the weekly' "Tinies” with Literary Supplement. -I am, etc., , PROGRESS. Wellington, April 12.
