Fatal Alpine Accident. — Seventeen tourists were crossing a snow bridge in the Tauern Range, near Salzburg, during a storm, when the bridge collapsed. Four were dug out. The remainder perished.— Press Assn.
Bible Students and Broadcasting.— The International Bible Students’ Association have been refused further radio broadcasting licenses because of their lectures containing controversial religious matter, states a Press Association message from Ottawa. Half a million signatures over a protest petition are sought in an aerial appeal. The matter is to be aired in the House of Commons. Refusal of licenses is declared an attack on free speech.
A New Gymnasium.—The Mayor and Councillors have been invited to attend the opening of the new footballers' gymnasium at Newtown Park, which will take place at 7.45 p.m. on March 30.
Badcock Testimonial.—The City Council decided last night that the request of Hie Wellington Cricket Association for permission to conduct a special match on April 14, to be known as the “Badcock Testimonial” match, be approved, the Cricket Association to’pay the cost of advertising the closing of the reserve.
A Flourishing Union.—The Dominion Convention of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held at Napier vestordav. The corresponding secretary’s report indicated a large increase in membership. There are now 208 branches with a total membership of 7922. In addition nine Island branches have 600 members, and Bands of Hope 2213. A lengthy presidential address was delivered by Mrs. T. E. Taylor.
