TRADE WITH CANADA
NEGOTIATING A TREATY PROPOSAL TEMPORARILY LAID ASIDE Attempts to negotiate a trade treaty between New Zealand and Canada have apparently been suspended temporarily. It had been suggested that the Minister of Finance (Hon. W. D. Stewart) intended to proceed to Canada to confer with the authorities there, and Mr. Stewart was asked yesterday whether he could throw any light on the subject. “A proposal was under discussion by the Government,” the Minister stated, “but owing to the fact that the Canadian Parliament will be in session for some time, the proposal has been laid aside in the meantime.” TRADE AGREEMENT NO ALTERATION AT PRESENT. By Telegraph.-Press association Christchurch, March 13. The recent agitation in Canada for a cancellation of the trade agreement with New Zealand was referred to the Hon. A. D McLeod. “There is no present fear of any alteration,” he replied, “although I know what agrarian pressure means to any Government. In replying to a deputation on the subject, the Canadian Minister said that there would be no alteration without careful consideration, so we do not anticipate any change.”
