THE RACING WORLD

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By

“The Watcher.”)

Civility Ims been withdrawn from the North Island Challenge Stakes.

Star God was not brought to Trentham with Star Stranger, Joy King and Knightlike. He has shown no form to warrant the assumption that lie would win on the trip, but there is a chance that age will do something for him.

Rapier looks as if he has come through a very solid preparation for his Trentham engagements, and his mile gallop yesterday morning was one of the most brilliant ever recorded at Trentham. In addition, he showed every sign of goilt" on with it at the end and he pulled up in perfect order. Rapier must possess an undeniable chance in the Thompson Handicap, but the Trentham Gold Cup should see him at his best.

Star Stranger is carrying a bit more condition at present than bis trainer likes due to the hard tracks since be last 'raced, which have prevented him from doing the amount of work desired. It should not take much, however, to bring him back to his best form and, in any case, his undeniable class will carry him a long way m this week's engagements.

Money Order won at his last appearance at Trentham and, judged by the manner in which he accomplished his six-furlong gallop on the track yesterday morning, he has improved in the interval. It is understood that I. Green who rode him when he won both at Ellerslie and Trentham, will again be in the saddle on Thursday. Joy Bird will be ridden in the Thompson Handicap by S. Wilson, who will also be on Scoff in his engagements.

Raasay so far is without a rider for his engagement in the North Island Challenge Stakes. H. Wiggins was understood by his trainer to have contracted to ride, but it appears that Wiggins was engaged for Concentrate. It is probable that the southern lightweight, L. J. Ellis, will get the mount on Raasay. Raasay is not so forward as desired owing to a recent bad cold, but he can be expected to make steady improvement from now on. It has not yet been decided whether he will do his Easter racing at Ellerslie or Riccarton.

Miss Ransom was responsible for a brilliant half-mile at Trentham yesterday morning. This sister to Hynanna created a very favourable impression when she first raced a few months ago, and following upon her second at, Trentham in January, she won at Egmont. It is plain that Miss Ransom has improved since she was last at Trentham, and she was pretty good then.

The Kilbroney—Oratress colt Concentrate is growing into a fine-solid-loow ing horse, and he is also galloping well on the tracks. He is not a brilliant beginner, but he sticks on in his races better than most two-year-olds, and he is greatly improved on what he was a month or two back.

For the .second time this season the Dunedin Jockey Club has the appointment of a handicapper under consideration. The club’s policy of requiring applicants to state the remuneration required is open to criticism. For such an important position ability should be the first consideration, A cheap man may easily prove expensive. It is reported that the Paper Money filly Polly Flinders, who was formerly trained at Wingatui, recently changed hands in Sydney at 600 guineas. Polly Flinders has won several races in Australia amongst the ponies. She, by the way, is referred to- by Australian papers as out of a Solfanello mare. Solfanello is a well-known gelding. As a matter of fact, Polly Flinders is a rather attractively bred filly, as her dam was got by Solferino from Stepka, by St. Leger from Stepfeldt, a sister to Stepniak, and also to She, the dam of Bobadil, one of the best in his day in Australia.

“I used to keep two trotting horses when I was single, but when I got married J. found I couldn’t keep both them and tho wife," remarked a AJanaia resident at the cattle show on Wednesday. “I couldn’t get rid of the wife, so I got rid of the troltena/’ he added.

Chivers and Subdivision have each earned 51b, penalties for the Silvet’slream Handicap to-morrow. Clavers will now carry 7.5, and Subdivision 8.11. TRENTHAM TRACK NOTES Tuesday. The weather was fine and mild for training work. The trial grass and tan tracks were open and both were in use. One or two good gallops were witnessed, including two ol exceptional merit. Except where mentioned the gallops were on the tan or plough. Jet Black opened proceedings with three furlongs iu 37sec. Quantum did a couple of rounds of pacing. Panther, from a walking start and picked up by Stay Bird at the half, ran five furlongs in Imin, 3jsec., tho last half in 51sec. Sudden Storm began fast at the seven furlongs and ran the last six in Imin. 19sec., the last half in 54sec. She was stopping at the finish after the fast early pace. Swoopaloug and Prickles ran four furlongs on the course proper in 50sec. Cimabuo alone ran lour furlongs in 49 l-ssec. He was ridden by S. Wilson, but R. Reed will be bis rider on Thursday. ~ , Wild Work, giving Quarter Deck weight, finished on terms at the end of seven furlongs in Imin. S2sec. Raasay was out doing easy work looking bright and well. Star Stranger, Joy King and Knightlike did pace work, as also did Le Clioueas, Prince Humphrey, Dimmer, Alithra Tho Hawk and Goshawk. Bright Day and Lancer ran a mile on the grass, the last seven in Imin. 32 2-ssec. Lancer shaped well and gal. loped in resolute style. Cosmetic and Wild Pigeon galloped a smart six furlongs in Imin. Ifisec. Wild Pigeon finished well, and Cos-, metic, who carried considerably more weight, shaped nicely. Concentrate and Royal Duke ran half a mile in 49 3-ssec., Concentrate finishing solidly. Satrap ran about a mile and threequarters at a solid pace, doing something like 13sec. for tho furlong.

Miss Ransom and Sfagtiunter on the "rass, with light-weights, ran half a mile in 47sec—a brilliant performance. Miss Ransom held the upper hand at the finish, but Staghunter had the outside running and would no doubt have gone better for a stronger rider. Money Order, with a good weight up, ran six furlongs in Imin. 15sec. He took 3S 2-ssec. for the first three furlongs ami finished exceptionally well. It ’was a first-class gallop. Oratrix was much superior to Kindle over six furlongs in Imin. 17 2-ssec. Rapier and Hynanna on the trial grass ran a mile in Imin. 40sec., the first half in 49 2-ssec. and the last half in 50 3-ssec. Rapier kicked up at the finish and was two to three lengths ahead of Hynanna. As the latter carried R. J. Mackie and Rapier A. Eastwood, Hynanna would be conceding all of two stone, and he put up a great performance. It was the best mile gallop ever seen at Trentham, and Rapier pulled up in great order. Dancing Star had the better of \\ et Paint at the end of four furlongs in 51 l-ssec.

ELLERSLIE TRAINING NOTES

THE FRANKLIN MEETING Dominion Special Service. Auckland, March 13. There was no galloping worthy of note at Ellerslie on Tuesday, but a little schooling work was indulged in. Archibald, who is coming on rapidly, gave a finished &r,play over four hurdles. . Taitaiata, who is still lame, jumped hurdles and afterwards accompanied Glenotus. Simplicitas and Kamehameha over the steeplechase fences in the centre of the course. Glenotus and Simplicitas jumped ui their usual capable fashion, but Taitaiata hit hard at the double and is evidently troubled by his lameness. Kamehameha baulked a couple of times, but was eventually got over all right. Despite hie inclination to shirk, he has good fencing ability and should come on with practlLuxurious gave a rather pleasing display for a beginner over hurdles, and Master Doon also shaped very well in another lesson. Abbev Day has left R. Brown s stable and joined that of F. Tutchen at Te Rapa. , , Sir Archie was more seriously hurt than at first supposed when the tram collision occurred. He broke a couple of ribs and will be idle tor a short while. Skin abrasions were the worst injuries of the others concerned. Siaosi scored two well-deserved victories at Pukekohe, and Mr. H. L. Kussell’s successes were very warmly received. Modest Boy and Schorr should not have been beaten on the second day at Pukekohe. Another horse hit Modest Boy at the start and nearly turned him round. After being in an apparently hopeless position at the end oi a furlong, he finished in great style to get second. As he looks susceptible to still further improvement he should take some beating next time out. Schorr lost many lengths by running on the outside of Glenetta in the early stages of his race, and after an interrupted run in the straight he did remarkably well to finish a close third. I hat effort will not be lost sight of when bchorr undertakes his I’aeroa engagements. Tea Time was not started on the second day at Pukekohe. His first day’s effort was very puzzling, as he was fancied by his connections. He raced like a horse that was short of work, as he did once before at lau. marunui, and then won in hollow fashion from Aussie a week later at AVuipu. . lit Archeen was another horse that puzzled the punters at Pukekohe. He was fancied also by his trainer, but seemed to get hemmed in at the 1.-omo turn and then did not finish too well. On the second day he got a fine run and won in dashing style, improving considerably on his first effort. The Immigrant, with backers undeterred by a reverse at New Plymouth, was installed a very short-priced favourite on Monday. He began wel , but, tested by King Merv t bo middle stages, he faded badly at the finish after letting his supporters down twice running. Ho may be at a reasonable price next time out. No fault could be found with his appearance and he hit out splendidly in his pielim.muy. Subdivision spreadeagled a moderate field on Monday and is evidently back to his best. In his present orm he will prove hard to oeat in hack events at Trentham.

The fields are very satisfactory, and the meeting should be a successful one from all points of view.

Proceedings open with the Novice Handicap. which contains the names of many runners whose capabilities are an unknown quantity, so a surprise may be in stere. Suntiie, who was tourth to Princess Thorpe, Sunspot, and Overture at Wyndhajn in January, may carry a fair measure of support on this oi-unsion, while two others likely to command resitct are Musical Chimes and Coy Hells. The latter was second to Sunbell at the recent Invercargill meeting.

In the Ferry Handicap, the prospects of Kyra, Jessie McKinney, Royal iStan, Helen McGregor, and Secret bink are likely to be favoured. Tnc former was second to Helen McGregor at Wintm in December, and is now in receipt of 36 yards. Jessie McKinney was i.liird to Jade ami Alpha Wilkes at the recent Invercargill meeting, at which Secret Link also showed goo'l form by winning the Travis Memorial Handicap, and running third in the Waikiwi Handicap. Roval Stan was second to Bob Wilkes at Gme in December, and now conies in on 48 yards better terms. The advantage of tho handicap may see the first three do best.

In the Wyndham Trotting Cup the fcim in the ‘ Invercargill Trotting Cup and Trotting Club Handicap should be a guide, but notwithstanding this, the winner is not easy to locate. Lady Freeman, 24 yards, won the Invercargill Cup from Hush-a-bye, 12 yards, and Slump, 60 yards, with Nelson McElwyn, 60 yards, fourth. Now Hush-a-bye receives j 6, instead of 12 yards, from Lady Freeman, who also meets Slump and Nelson McElwyn on 36 yards worse terms. The ir.ttir and Hush-a-bye did not run in the Trotting Club Handicap which was won by Miss Adonis, 24 yards, in 4.40 2-5, with Lenamhor and Liberal in the minor places, their times being '4.36 3-5 and 4.37 respectively. Liberal now meets Lenamhor and Miss Adonis on 12 and 36 yards better terms for a defeat of a length and a hall', so his prospects show up in a favourable light. Revolt, who finished fourth in the Trotting Club Handicap may prove tiic best of the 36 yard division, though possibly an improved snowing will come from Nelson McElwyn. When they are racing down the -Lraight the names of Liberal, Revolt, and Lenamhor may be those that will be called.

Willie Wilkes, who was second to Liin’g Advance in the Trial Handicap at Gere in December, is in the Edendale Handicap. On that occasion they started from the same mark; now there is 36 yards in Willie’s favour. Sea Hawk Haere Ha, and Sunfish each contested the Coldstream Handicap at Invercargill the second day, Haere Ra being placed third and Sea Hawk fourth. Haere I a was then in receipt of 36 yards; now they are on file same mark, which makes it look like Sea Hawk. Needles won at the Southland meeting on January 3, registering 3.37 2-5 on a slightly holding tr--and is preferred to Erin's Advance. I’os sibly she will be tho hardest one lor Sea Hawk to dispose of.

The Tdi Tois Handicap should sec an interesting contest. Sonata, who won a saddle event of one mile and a quarter at Oamaru in 3-8. on a track inclined Io be slow, will probably be a well-sup-ported member of the scratch division Princess Thorpe. John Dee. Coldwood, and Sunstorm contested the Visitors Hamli-

cap (saddle) at the Invercargill meeting the first-named finished third, Sunstorm second, and John Dee fourth. Sunstorm and Princess Thorp commenced from the same mark (36 yards), Coldwood and John Dee each conceding 24 yards. The djstance winch separated Sunstorm and Princess Thorpe at the finish was ten lengths, so I question whether the latter can reverse positions on this occasion Azaleas ran second to Cardinal and Blue in the Jeliicoe Handicap, of one mile and a quarter, at the same fixture, Marinca who was in receipt of 24 yards, being unplaced. The last-named won the Au Revoir Handicap (saddle) from El Caron and Sunstorm, the latter conceding 1 yards, while now he is in receipt of 12 When the machine closes it ro,ay be found that the prospects of iSunetorm, Azaleas and Sonata will be most favoured.

Form in the Ferry Handicap will throw some light on the chances of several of those engaged in the Menzies Handicap but, the extra distance must also be taken into consideration. Racing over two miles at Invercargill, in the race won by Arctotis, Bon Fleur was placed second, and Secret Link third. Bon Fleur was then in receipt of 96 yards, whereas now there is only 48 yards between them. Jade, who finished fourth, now meets these two on 84 and 36 yards better terms, and so may account for both. Gardenclla and Peter Boy also enter the fray on easier terms, and both are likely to receive good support. Possibly the three whose prospects will be most favoured are Gardenella, Jade, and Secret Link.

It would seem likely that Overture, Red Abbey, Erin’s Advance, Maybird, Princess Thorpe, and Luath will be the ones from which the public will endeavour to select the ultimate winner of the President's Handicap (saddle), of one mile and a lialf. Overture ran third to Maybird at Tapanui in a similar class of event, their times being 3.39 4-5 and 3.36 respectively. with Maybird conceding 12 yards. Now there is 60 yards between them, which certainly points to Overture. Red Abbey was third to Coldwood and Lnath in the Thomson Handicap on March 2, there being ten lengths between first and second horses, and six between second and third. Red Abbey was conceding 24 yards in the race in question, whereas he now receives 48, and so reads best. Now, as between Luath and Princess Thorpe, there is the form in the Visitors’ Handicap at Invercargill to be taken as a guide. In that race Luath finished first and Princess Thorpe third, the latter being twelve lengths away. On that occasion Luath registered 3.34, and Princess Thorpe 3.35 1-5, but botli could probably have done a bit better had there been anything to gain by doing so. Princess Thorpe now comes in on 48 yards better terms. The public may pin their faith to Overture, Red Abbey, and Princess Thorpe.

The Final Handicap has a very open aspect, and speculation is likely to take a wide range. Needles was made favourite iu the Jeliicoe Handicap at Invercargill, and ran fourth. If that support *tas justified. Needles should be in favour again for the race now under review, as Azaleas, who finished second, is now set to concede a,n additional 24 yards. Hush-a-bye was second in the Invercargill Cup. and appears nicely placed on a 2.59 mark. Alva Lass ran second to White Sun in the Coldstream Handicap, being defeated by a head, for which she now receives another 24 yards. Coldwood won very easily over a mile and a half in 3.34 4-5. and if he repeats that performance he should hold Alva Lass and Sunshade safe. Kinney Dillon went 3.32 to win nicely by three lengths at Waikouaiti, and he may go out favourite. Of the renziinder, the chances of Sunstorm and Lenamhor may 1“5 fancied, but with the pull they have in the handicap. Kinney Dillon, Coldwood, and Hush-a-byc are sure to be well supported.
