Mead was charged with wilfully damaging trees and stealing pohutukawa wood, valued at 30s. A gardener, who gave evidence, said that there had been repeated complaints concerning the destruction of trees on the cliffs above Lady’s Bay. He set a watch one day and saw the defendant and his young son cut down a green tree. Over twenty tons ol wood had been removed, and two ton was lying stacked in Mead’s yard. Defendant said he had taken the wood only from trees on the beach. He denied that he had cut any trees down. “You are fined £lO on each charge.” said the Magistrate (Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.), “and you are lucky not to be sent to gaol.” Mead: Can I have time to pay tin. fine ? “Yes, fourteen days,” replied the Magistrate. “I can’t do it by then,” said Mead. "Very well, go in,” said Mr. Hunt.
