PALMERSTON LOAN PROPOSALS
CLEANING THE DAM ESTIMATE OF COST TO BE MADE Palmerston North, February 20. At the meeting of the Palmerston Borough Council this evening, the Mayor (Mr. A. J. Graham) officially notified councillors that the recent loan proposals had been lost in the final count by seven votes, aud the sewerage proposals carried by a substantial margin. “The only comment I have to make is this,” said the Mayor, “and that is I think the council should proceed at once with the work of clearing out the silt in the dam. I move that the engineer prepare a report as to the cost.”
“If the ratepayers would not sanction a large amount,” said Councillor Elliott, “the only thing to do was to do the work bit by’ bit; £2OOO per year was paid from the water account to the general account.” In his opinion the council should not continue this policy, and the money should be devoted to improving the water supply. As much as possible should be expended to this effect.
The resolution was put to the meeting by the Mayor and carried.
