ON THE RANGE AT PAPAWAI

WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION’S MEETING AUSTRALIAN MARKSMEN COMPETING FINE SHOOTING BY VISITING RIFLEMAN (By Telegraph—Special Reporter ) Greytown, February 20. With marksmen from Victoria and New South Wales taking part, together with competitors from all parts of the Dominion, the annual meeting of the Wairarapa Rifle Association, which commenced on the range at Papawai to-day, is one of the most noteworthy in the history of the association. When the 121 entrants went down at the mounds this morning tor the compulsory service match, they found conditions to their liking, the light being good, while a steady left wind occasioned them little trouble. The 121 marksmen competing, represent an increase of 15 ou last years entries. At the conclusion of the meeting at Papawai practically all of them will proceed to the National Rifle Association’s meeting, which will commence at Trenthem on Thursday, attendance at the Wairarapa meeting being in the nature of a “preliminary canter” for (he sterner contests to follow. To-day at Papawai was confined to short-range matches. The compulsory service match at yards, seven shots in 35 seconds, the Bidwill match, and the New South Wales match were disposed of this morning. P. C. Hamilton, of Wanganui, and 11. Simmonds of Paeroa (who won the Bal--linger Belt in 1921) were the winners of the Service Match, each returning an aggregate of 31. Some fine shooting was seen in the Bidwil! Match, E. J. Channell, of New South Wales, being the winner, with the very fine aggregate of 49 out of a possible 50. Ho is cne of the finest shots in Australia, and has represented the Commonwealth at the English Bisley. besides representing New South Wales in numerous inter-State matches. lortyeights were obtained by F. S. Hood, Featherston, J. C. Feast Greytown, and H. Harries, Christchurch, but in the “count-back” the honour went to Hood, who is a brother of the late Captain G. Hood, the ill-fated trans-Tas-man (tier. Incidentally, the association intends to include a memorial match on its programme in honour of the deceased aviator. There was a close contest between A. ,1. Preece, of Victoria, and P. Berry, of Tararua, in the New South Males Match, of ten shots at 509 yards. Preece obtained two s’s with his sighters, Berry casting out the two 4’s secured with his sighters. Berry finished with three s’s and Preece with 3, 4. 5. both obtaining aggregates of 49, the Victorian being beaten by a point on the “count back. ' During the mid-day adjournment the Australian riflemen were entertained at luncheon by members of the Wairarapa Association. “You are shooting on a most historic range,” said the president of the association ,Mr. J. I*. Thompson), in extending a welcome to the visitors. “Thirty-three years ago the association commenced to shoot at Papawai. The New Zealand troops received their final musketry here during the war, and Papawai was also the scone of the final fighting during the Maori hostilities in the, 'Wairarapa many years ago. Mr. Thompson referred, to the value of such interchange of visits, and also paid a tribute to tho assistance given by the chairman of the Wellington Association (Mr. W. J. H. Haase) to the Wairarapa Association. The captains of the Victorian ami New South Wales teams. Mr. R. W. Reseigh, and Mr. A. R. McLeod suitably replied. Mr. Reseigh said that Victoria had both youth and age on its side, while Air. McLeod paid a tribute to the marking by the Maoris, which ho said was capital, quick, and correct. The midfield aggregate, which carries with if the Buchanan Alcmorial Challenge Cup, offered for the best aggregate in tho Bidwill, New South Wales, ’Wellington, and Buchanan Matches, was won by W. H. Harris, of Victoria, with 183. E. J. Channon, New South Wales, was second with 182 Conditions of the match, however are that the trophv must be won by a New Zealander, although outsiders are eligible to take the monetary prizes. F. Hood, Featherston, and W. R. Barrett. Sydenham (Christchurch), each with 182. tied for third place, these two heading the Dominion marksmen competing. Hood and Barrett will, therefore, have to fire off to-day to determine the holder ot tho cup. Detailed results are as follow.— SERVICE MATCH. 300 Yards. Seven shots in 35 seconds. £2 10s.P. C.
