B GRADE FIRST TEST WELLINGTON ORGANISATIONS FIRST AND SECOND BY Telegraph.—Press association. Christchurch, February 20. The band contest was continued lodav, tho E flat bass solo and llio trombone solo being hoard in the morning aiid llio visiting bandsmen being given a civic reception by the Mayor (Mr. J. K. Archer) in tho afternoon. This was followed by a drum solo section, and at night quartets and the 13 grade first test selection were judged. Results are as follow:— E FLAT BASS SOLO. “Romance Bohemian.” Goughian (Kaikorai), 94, points 1 T. I’heloung (Woolston), 90 points .. 2 J. Avery (Timaru Municipal), 89 points 3 Also competed: D. B GRADE FIRST TEST SELECTION. In this case there are two tests. The second will be judged to-morrow evening. Wellington Central Mission (conductor, Mr. C. Forrest) 1 Jupp’s Silver Band, Wellington (conductor, Mr. W. J. Jupp) 2 Dunedin City Tramways (conductor, Air. A. Gould) 3 Owing to the late hour of concluding to-night’s performances no comments were made by the judge. The aggregate points will be announced when the second test is concluded to-morrow night. Christchurch, February 20. The annual meeting of tho South Island Bands’ Association was held today. ....
The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £l3B Ils. The question of professionalism at contests was raised in a letter from Mr. R. J. Estall, who tendered his resignation as trustee. His reason, as stated, was that the association was drifting away from tho principle and objects for which it was formed, namely the fostering of competition among amateur bands. The secretary: It’s not ( he fault of ths association that wc are drifting towards professionalism. It is the fault of the bands themselves. It was stated that at the Dunedin contest some bands played as many as four professionals. It was agreed that the whole matter be referred to tho incoming executive for consideration. Dlr. Estall later withdrew his resignation. Ths election of officers resulted as follows: President. Dr. 11. T. J. Thacker; treasurer, Mr. H. Sweney; secretary, Jlr. T. F. Hall; trustee, Mr. R. J. Estall; committee, Messrs. W. Larcoinbe, E. Billcliff, J. McCullough, W. D. Murray, W. Newton, D. Oakes, J. D, Hunter, A. Wood, A. G. Homer and R. B. Head.
