Dominion Special Service. Nelson, February 20. What appears to have been a deliberate attempt to burn down the Commercial Hotel was made a few evenings ago. The chief cook, who had left the premises about 7.30, after seeing that everything was safe, had occasion to return about a quarter of an hour later, and he discovered the old bakehouse, a wooden structure, on fire, A bundle of paper had been placed between the outside and inside wall, where a board was missing, and set alight. A few buckets of water put out the flames, but not before some of the woodwork had been charred. TWO HOUSES DEMOLISHED. Bl TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION Auckland, February 20, A fire broke out at Ellerslie this afternoon, and resulted in the complete destruction of two houses. A two-story house, in which two were living, took fire first, and in a couple of minutes the building was an inferno. After a quarter of an hour nothing remained but a tall chimney stack and a heap of blazing timber. The neighbouring house, occupied by Mr. Kane, an employee of the Railway Department, soon caught alight. This house also was quickly burned, although a piano was, fortunately, saved from the building. The two-story dwelling was owned by A. E. Tatley and occupied by Harry Brockbank, who lost everything. EIGHT-ROOMED R ESIDENCE DESTROYED. By Telegraph.—Press association Auckland, February 20. An eight-roined house in Panmure Road, owned by Mr. D. Ryan, was totally destroyed by fire last night. Mr. and Mrs. Ryan escaped when the building was enveloped in flames. DAMAGE IN HOSIERY SHOP. BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION. Dunedin, February 20.
