BAHREIN ISLANDS

.— DEMANDS OF PERSIA Rugby, February 15. In the House of Commons, asked whether certain demands had been made by the Persian Government, particularly regarding Bahrein, Mr. G. Locker-Lampson, Foreign Under-Sec-retary, said: “The Persian Government protested some weeks ago against the terms of the. Treaty of Jeddah between Great Britain and Hedjaz, on the ground that reference in that Treaty to the Islands of Bahrein is contrary to the territorial integrity of Persia." His Majestv’s Government is unaware of any valid ground on which the Persian Government could base a claim of sovereignty over these islands, and has explained this to the Persian Government.” —British Official Wireless.

[The Bahrein Islands, in the Persian Gulf, near the Arabian coast, are under the protectorate of the Indian Government. The ruler is Sheik Sir Hamid Isa bin Ali al Khalifah, K.C.T.E. They are the centre of important pearl fisheries, with a population of about 115,000.]
