WAIRARAPA PROGRESS LEAGUE
MASTERTON BRANCH MT. HOLDSWORTH EXCURSION PROPOSED Masterton, February 13. A meeting of the Afasterton branch of the Wairarapa Progress League was held to-night, Air. G. R. Sykes, AI’.P., ocupying the chair. The secretary (Air. F. Norris) reported that, as arranged,, a sub-committee had waited upon the Castlepoint County Council with a request that the Whakataki stream at Castlepoint be bridged. The council’s reply had been that it would consider the matter. Also the league had made a visit to several places of tourist interest in the South Wairarapa. The reserve at Featherston had been inspected, it being found that it was reached by two surveyed roads which would cost onlv a small sum to place in order. It had been decided to call a public meeting to arouse interest in the matter of developing the reserve. . r , Air. Al G. Mackay was appointed chairman of the Masterton branch of the league, Air. W. G. Lamb treasurer, an_d the°following an executive:—Alessrs. W. L. Free, W. Palamontain, W. G. Lamb, and G. Daubney. Air. A. D. Lowe was appointed auditor. The question of asking the Railway Department to conduct an excursion train irom Wellington to Mount Holdsworth on Good Friday was discussed, and it was decided to make the request. The secretary brought forward the matter of assisting the residents of Eketahuna in having metalled a three-mile stretch of road, the impassablenesS ot which was diverting residents of e town to distant shopping centres. The chairman said that he had made an endeavour to have the road metalled as it was an arterial road, and he had conducted the Alinister of Public Worts over it. The Alinister had said that the metalling should be done. However, an endeavour was now being made bv the Alain Highways Board to consolidate the road, which - wa ® j deal with, and later it would be placed in order. The chairman said he would go into the matter and report at the next meeting of the league. Mr F W. Pointon gave- an address on the activities of other townsjn the direction of providing catnmng _ for motorists, and suggested that the i OT(T ,.. might follow suit.. It was de cided to communicate with the Hasd ''F? Borough Council asking for infonna concerning its scheme.
