It has been stated that it has been very difficult to stock some of the Taranaki rivers with trout owing to the depredations of eels, which were said to l.e very plentiful in those streams (reports the “News”). The formation of eel clubs in Stratford, Inglewood, and Elthain districts should soon see a clearance effected, judging by the activity of hosr.of live members cf those clubs. Whilst the present keen competition and healthy rivalry continues that activity is not likely to wane. Already thousands of eels have been lifted from the streams, some of them of very largo dimensions So far a Stratford Eel Club membei holds the record for. weight, but a eounle of cels were on view al Inglewood that could run Stratford close. One caught bv G. Salisbury in the Mangan ni Biver at Kaimata. weighed 2?lb. Vloz.. and another 181 b. 2oz. The largest pel Io the credit of a mmnbpj of the Fltham Club is 201 b.. and it was caught by Messrs. H. Andrews ami W. Phillips in Hunter’s Creek at Jprsevdalo. The largest nert of the world’s sunnlv of borax is obtained from California. where it was first found in the search for gold in 1856.
