FALSE ALARMS
TROUBLE AT LOWER HUTT. “It is a crime that people who help in the suppression of fires should be pulled away from their work, only to find that a trick is being played on them,” said Mr. W. T. Strand, Mayor of Lower Hutt, when referring last night to a number of false alarms which the Fire Brigade had received. The Alayor stated that the Fire Prevention Committee had reported that since the alarm system had been installed, thirteen calls had been received, only one of which had been for an actual fire—the others were "apparently malicious false alarms." It was decided to offer a reward of £5 for evidence that would lead to the conviction of any person or persons giving a false alarm of fire, a suitable notice to be placed in. the vicinity of each alarm box. Air. Strand said that he hoped a severe example would be made of offenders.
