THE RACING WORLD

SECOND DAY AT ROTORUA

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By

“The Watcher.”)

The fall of rain at Wanganui on Saturday night will greatly benefit the track for this week’s racing. The Trentham trainer, IT. Telford, is progressing satisfactorily from his recent operation. In the meantime Joy Bird is going along well in Iter preparation and will be a starter in the Wanganui Cup. Another rider will have to _ bo engaged for Hynanna in the Wanganui Cup on Thursday, as JL .1. Mackie dislocated a knee at New Plymouth last week. Twelve months ago Rapine failed by a head to carry 10.4 to victory in the Wanganui Cup, and he was unlucky. It is worth mentioning that in all the long history of the Wanganui Cup only one horse has carried Ost. to victory, and that was Dudu, who in 1890 won under 9.2. Last year Piuthair won after being penalised 71b. for her wins at Egmont and Taranaki, ami Hynanna has been similarly penalised. There is a difference, however, between 8.9, which was Piuthair's weight, and 9.12. which Hynanna will have Io carry. At the same’time, Hynanna cannot be ruled out of the possibilities. It takes a lot of weight to bring a horse of class back to those ho outclasses. Pit and well Mandane should have a chance of winning the Wanganui Cup. It was unlucky that she should meet with trouble while racing at Ellerslie, which caused her to bn eased up, for she was in the best order at the time that: she had been since sho won the Oaks and Fendalton at Iticcarton. This year’s held in the Wanganui Cup is far from being a strong one, particularly when it is recollected that the distance is a mile and three-quarters, and Hynanna has a big weight to carry. Shirley’s form this season has been a good deal below her best, but in the spring she carried 8.10 and, giving Booster 61b.. she ran him to ii head over six furlongs at Trentham. Shirley raced twice last month at the Wellington summer meeting and showed fair form. On the concluding day sho finished fifth in the race won by Money Order from Cimabue and The Hawk. Twelve, months ago at Wanganui she failed to win the Flying Handicap under 8.10, being favourite, but on the second day sho won carrying 8.9. With the season advanced a. month since she last raced, Shirley should be able to put up a creditable performance on Thursday under 8.1. Limited’s best recent effort was his third at Trentham in the race won by The Hawk. Ou that occasion ho carried 7.13 and was three lengths from tho winner, being separated by Aussie. That form is good, and Limited should be a possibility for Urn sprint event at Wanganui. Paganelli was due at Wanganui yesterday to fulfil engagements at Hie forthcoming meeting. Koauau, the winner of the Autumn Hurdle Handicap,at the Dunedin meeting on Thursday, is owned by tho North Island sportsman, Mr. J. £>. Gaisford. He visited Kiccarton for tho Now Zealand Cup meeting, and stayed there under W. McDonald’s care. He has done quite a lot of racing since then, but this was his first success. The weather was ideal for training operations at Wanganui on Saturday morning, but the grass tracks are very hard, and most of the work was douo on tile plough. Bent was sent round a couple of times at half-pace on tho plough. White Kinglet went a, couple of circuits on the hurdle track at half pace. Covent Garden and Lysander, both with light-weights up, hopped off at the fiveturlong post on number two grass track. They both got going quickly, and kept together all the way, registering 1.2, time which could have been improved upon had they been driven along. On tho same track Hallownoon, Royal Elm, and a Day Comet gelding owned by Mr. Jan Higgie, were companions in a sixturlong Hutter. Hallownoon acted as pacemaker all the way, and cleared out in the straight to finish some lengths ahead of Royal Elm, whoso first galfop it was since tho Marton meeting, llallownoon’s time was 1.18 2-5. King Mart, looking all the better for his racing at Hawcra, slipped over half a mile in 52 1-5. Out: Jack and Damaris were associated in a spin over half a mile on the plough, both hitting out nicely. Axikiwai was responsible for a good performance when ho finished second in tho Dunedin Cup. He was always near tho front, and ho stayed out the journey well, though Pink Note beat him home decisively. This was easily the best performance registered by Arikiwai, who has been steadily improving with the racing he has done this season, and he gives tho impression now that he is going to develop into a winner over all distances. The Dunedin Cup winner, Piuk Note, it is interesting to note, traces on his dam’s side to the Golden Grape mure Pungawherewhere, who won the same race 52 years back. Pungawherewhere was included among the mares composing the Wellington Park Stud, and she threw three cup winners in Telford (Wanganui Cup), St. James (Dunedin Cup), and Crackshot (Auckland Cup and Canterbury Cup). Money Order did very little racing in the early part of his career, but this season he has developed into a very solid horse, who has registered some high-class sprinting performances. He ran a fine race when lie won on the concluding day of the Wellington meeting last month, and he added to his reputation in the Dunedin Publicans’ Handicap on Thursday, when he got up on tho post to dead-heat with the speedy Silver Coot. There is no reason why Money Order should not go on a bit further than six furlongs, and he will have tc be reckoned with in other important races later in the season. Hymestra (by Hymettus—Straga) was a brilliant sprinter, and he -oiild also run a mile, but eight furlongs was liis limit. Hynanna, who is a son of l.lymestra, is a much better Mayer than

was fits parent. Missnanna (dam of llynauna, winner of the Egmont ami Taranaki Cups), is an Australian-bred mai;e by Land of Song, and she is out of Hansom, a daughter of Radium. There is a profusion of staying blood in Missnanna’s pedigree, and that is no doubt the source of Uynanna’s stamina. While most of the progeny of Paper Money shine as sprinters, Pink Note lias always been a solid customer, who, early in his career, showed up as a good performer at a mile. He inherits stamina from his dam. All Pink, by All Red from Luciana. by St. Leser from Katipo, whose half-brother, St. James, won the Dunedin Cup for tho late Sir George McLean in 1890. Pink Nolo is the first of the stock of Paper Money to win at a mile and a half.

At a meeting of the Greymoutli District Committee on Friday, the Nelson Jockey Club applied for a change of the dates of its meeting set down for February 23 and 25, and in support of (Im application the secretary of the club wiote as follows: —“I'liis club has decided to abandon its meeting, originally fixed for February 23 and 25, and to apply for new dates later iu the season. We earnestly trust that the District Committee will extend Io our applicio lion its fullest and sympathetic eonsiioral ion, as after the most careful consideration by this committee, it was fell that it would be very unwise to go on witii our meeting on tho dales fixed. We have had no ruin for practically two or three months, and our I rack, always • a hard one in summer, is almost unfit to race on. At our trotting meeting last week many of the horses could stand only one race per day. The drought is also having a very depressing otl'ret on the community as a whole, especially in tho country districts, from which. of course, wo draw a great deal of our support, and as there is no apparent prospect whatever of the weather breaking in the immediate future, it was foil: that with the course as it is, ami tho community iu its present depressed state, it would be courting disaster to go un. In addition, ns you will note, there are other meetings in the North Island about tin: same time, and as tho Nelson course is always known as a hard one, it is almost certain the owners would prefer to race nearer homo rather than cross the strait with a likelihood of breaking their horses down before the Easter meetings come. Our prospects for reasonable fields in all the circumstances therefore were not at. all bright, and alter consulfation with Mr. Fogarty and Air. Sellers, and also one or two of the biggest nominators, all of whom considered v.e would be following the best course if the meeting was abandoned. As it appears very probable that Marlborough will be vacating their May dales (4 and 5) in view of tho likelihood of their racing at Trentham in April, wo now apply for May 3 and 5, subject to these dates not being required by Marlborough. We would be glad to hear, as soon as possible. tho result of our request.” The application for May 3 mid 5 was approved subject t<> these dates not being required by Marlborough. Christchurch, February 13. J. J. Kennerley had ideas of sending Native Chief against the record of 2.3 3-5 held by Aeron, and permission had been granted by the executive of tho Canterbury Park Trotting Club for the use of Addington track one day this week. Mr. J. A. Duff, however, had other ideas on the subject, and as a result Native Chief lias been handed over io his owner, who has sent him for a spell to J. Bryce’s property at Hornby. No arrangements have yet been made as to the future movements of Native Chief. Incidentally, it may be mentioned that J. J. Kennerley held a lease of Native Chief until February 28, but surrendered it at the request of the owner of the horse. It. is understood that tho reason for Mr. Duffy’s action is tho hostile reception accorded his horse and tho driver on iheir return to file birdcage at the conclusion of the special match race with Great Bingen on Saturday. Native Chief was responsible for four false starts, and eventually got a decided advantage in the dispatch, much to the disanrointment of (ho public, whose sympathies were evidently will) the unlucky Great Bingen.
