LOWER HUTT AFFAIRS

BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETS. Tho Lower Hutt Borough Council met last night. There were present the Mayor (Mr. W. T. Strand), Councillors A. J. Hobbs, A. Grierson, J. Mitehell, E. Campbell A. E. Carver, A. Roberts E. AValdie, AV. G. Meldrum, and A. Mcßain. Before the business of the meeting was commenced, the Mayor extended a welcome to Councillor Carver, who took his seat at tho Council table for the first time. Mr. Carver took the statutory oath of allegiance. It was decided to open a subscription list in the district for tho Hood-Jlon-crieff fund, and to work, as far as possible, in conjunction with Wellington. It was decided to support tho following remit, which is to bo brought up by the Green Island representatives at the Municipal Conference at Nelson: "That the present law relating to the construction, reconstruction, and maintenance of highways in the Dominion, be amended so as to enable the Main Highways Board to be wholly responsible for the main arterial roads in tho Dominion, with a view to dealing with present and future traffic requirements.” Tho secretary of the Lower Hutt branch of tho Women’s Christian Tcmeraneo Union wrote that members of the union had long felt the need of further seats in the Riddiford Park for tffb usa of mothers with children. The seoi-e--tary asked the probable cost of a seat of the typo provided, and whether the Council would accept tho gift of a seat from the union. The Mayor said that he was sure that the Council would be more than grateful for the generous rift, which was readily accepted. The 'initials “W.C.T.U.," will be inscribed on the seat. Some time ago Sir Alexander Roberts expressed his willingness to donate a seat for the park. This Will be installed later. Mr. T. AV. Slinn was appointed fire inspector for the borough. The sanitary inspector reported that one ease of diphtheria had been notified during the past month. It was stated that January had been a record month for the issue of building permits. 67 having been issued, the total value amounting to £57,504.

Fees collected for January totalled £365 7s.
