PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The fortnightly meeting of the Petone Borough Council was held last night, the Mayor (Mr. D. McKenzie) presiding. Others present were: Councillors U. McCarthy, A. Scholefield, E. N. Campbell, J. Ashby, W. H. Edwards, J. M. Pearson, and J. 17. Longman. Iteierring to a letter from the Petone Beautifying Society concerning the pollution of the ioreshore, the Mayor said he thought that everything should be done to rid the foreshore of that evil. He had always stressed the necessity of making the foreshore beautiful, and doing away with the filth which is wash- * ed upon on the beach, and he thought the time had arrived when something had to be done. He considered it wise to get experts to consider the matter without delay. It was decided that the engineer of the Wellington Harbour Board and the chief sanitary inspector of Wellington be asked to attend a conference with W. B. Gough, the Potono sanitary inspector, so as the matter could be discussed as soon as possible. Councillor Campbell asked the Mayor If there was anything wrong with the Koro Koro stream. Complaints had been made to him that the water had a, funny taste, and he wanted to know if any complaint had been made to the touncil. The Mayor stated that so far ns. he knew no complaint had been received. The water in the Koro Koro stream was very pure, and there was nothing wrong with it at all. Mr. W. B. Gough (sanitary inspector) said that the water , was absolutely pure, and better than it had been for months. No complaint had been received by him. It was decided to charge a fee of ss. per season for each rider using the cycle track for practice. This season half that charge only will be made. The general manager of the Gear Meat Company, Ltd., wrote advising that his directors had agreed to the council’s request to dedicate a piece of land at the intersection of Railway Parade to the council. It was decided to write a letter thanking, the company.
